This Morning we had less wind so we where very slowly. The captain�came up with the idea of creating more telltailes. When we got these�strings attached to the ropes we could see exactly where the wind was�coming from. It works really well and we got a little bit faster.
We had a lot of sun today, so we could go sunbathiing at the dek.�It was today Stinas birthday, so we had a little party. After the�party we made some preparations forr the crew parade. At the evening�we had a safety exercise. All people needed to go to the�musterstation and all the people needed to be counted. A good�practice for knowing whatt to do when there would be an alarm.
MORGENSTER LOG/ 2 Augustus 2011
Ship o`hoi! Greetings from the Dutch Morgenster! A beautiful ship with tiny beds, slippery floors and the best collection of Europeans. When we first�arrived the ship in Stavanger, we were warmly welcomed by the captain and�his crew (and lots of cheap beer!!). It was a really great experience to�sail out of the doc along with lots of other big ships and hundreds of small�private boats, stacked with curious people. Definetly our 15 minutes of�fame!
Today we finally have Egersund behind us, and have our noses pointed towards�Halmstad, Sweden. Some of the other ships have already given up because of�the lack of wind, and turned on their engines last night. Giving up was�never an option for us, we will stay strong and make the crew on board proud�(even though the ETA says we will never reach Halmstad)!
When we are not giving our best on deck, we eat a lot of really good food�(weeeell, lets not mention the out-of-this-world dry bread!), listen to�reggae and teach each other cardgames from the different countries on board.
We are having a lot of fun on Morgenster and are really happy to get to�experience this amazing tall ships race!

Zuid, zuid oost, zuid zuid west, zuid zuid oost.. 3 knopen, 4 knopen, 6, 7,
8, 3, 5, 7 knopen wind.. en daar gaat de Tecla! We hebben een drukke nacht
en dag achter de rug, overstag, afvallen, oploeven en iedereen in proberen
te halen. We hebben vannacht wel een aantal goede slagen gemaakt, maar in
het klassement zijn wij nog steeds 4 in onze klasse en 13 overall. Er wordt
gepraat over finishen op zee zodat we optijd in de haven kunnen zijn. Dat
zou voor ons niet gunstig zijn, aangezien we weer liggen te drijven.. De
groep werkt hard, maar in stilte hopen we allemaal op meer wind!

THALASSA LOG / Zo 31 Juli
We gaan de haven bijna weer uit, we hebben hier vier geweldige dagen gehad. Er waren zo’n 4000 jongeren van verschillende schepen in de haven van Stavanger, het was erg leuk om met allemaal nieuwe mensen te praten over het zeilen natuurlijk, maar ook over de landen waar ze vandaan komen, wat ze studeren etc. We werden feestelijk binnengehaald in de haven van Stavanger, een Noor begeleidde ons naar alle activiteiten die georganiseerd werden. Donderdagmiddag was het begin van het weekend, dus veel Noren waren aanwezig in de haven bij de binnenvaart en eenmaal aan wal konden we de stad bekijken, andere schepen bezoeken en de haven bekijken die geheel in teken van dit evenement stond. Vrijdag waren er sportactiviteiten georganiseerd voor de alle bemanningsleden, zoals touwtrekken en kano�n. ’s Avonds hebben wij van de Thalassa een feest georganiseerd op het schip, waar veel bemanning van andere schepen langs kwamen. Zaterdagochtend zijn we vroeg met de ferry het fjord overgestoken, waar bussen klaar stonden om ons naar Preikestolen te vervoeren. We hebben daar met z’n allen een berg beklommen om een schitterend uitzicht te bewonderen, helaas was het mistig. We liepen tussen de bergmeren, watervallen en heel veel rotsen door. Jammer dat bijna de hele haven aan deze activiteit mee wilde doen, daardoor was het erg druk… Toen we terug kwamen waren tien Zweden gearriveerd, die met ons mee zeilen naar Halmstad. We hebben dus voor de komende dagen weer genoeg gespreksstof!�Het grootste spektakel moet nog komen: de uitvaart van alle tall-ships. Ze verwachten tienduizenden mensen die langs de kant ons staan uit te zwaaien. Ze hebben ons de verplichting opgelegd dat we dicht langs de kant moeten varen en met alle zeilen gehesen.�

THALASSA LOG / Do 28 Juli t/m Zo 31 Juli / Drie dagen Stavanger, Noorwegen
De volgende dag bekijken we de oude stad. ’s Middags hebben we de crew parade. De Russen in hun nette pakjes, en wij, ja wij als Nederlanders, gek dus! In de loop van de avond gaan we naar de crew party, eerst is het een beetje saai, maar uiteindelijk wordt het dan toch super gezellig. En wat blijkt de tent staat vol met Nederlanders, top!
THALASSA LOG / Aankomst Stavanger
Woensdagnacht kwamen de lichtjes van de kust van Noorwegen in zicht. De haven van Stavanger lag al vol met tall-ships vanuit de hele wereld. Wij werden al opgewacht door Noorse jongeren die ons gaan begeleiden in Stavanger en omstreken. Wij kunnen als bemanning gratis in alle musea in Stavanger en er worden allerlei tripjes voor ons georganiseerd. Zo kunnen we met een internationaal samengestelde groep een fjordentocht doen, maar we er is ook genoeg gelegenheid om op cultureel gebied Stavanger te verkennen.

De afvaart in Harlingen was een moment waarbij familie en vrienden vanaf de pier ons uitzwaaide. Toen we op het wad voeren ontstond er onder mij en andere trainees een gemoedelijke sfeer. We wilden allemaal wel in de mast klimmen of in het kluivernet om de zeilen uit en in te pakken. We wilden zeilen en werken, maar toen het schip op de motor de zandbank van de Waddenzee had vermeden, kwamen we op de Noordzee. �Daar stonden best hevige golven, zo ging het schip echt op en neer. De bemanning van het schip wilde toch zeilen met windkracht 5 en kwam uit het Noord Oosten. Je wilt van mij vast wel aannemen, dat het buiswater in tegen de patrijspoortjes sloeg aan de lijzijde van het schip. Dat was wel eventjes opkijken: “zo gebeurt dat bij de Thalassa van 282 ton.’’ Ik persoonlijk was door de golfslag en het buiswater wel eventjes zeeziek. �Maar de tabletten als primatour hielden mij er goed boven op.�
Een heel bijzonder moment was de lunch op dinsdag. Het was niet zozeer de nasi, maar de kapitein nam een frisse duik. We hadden namelijk gegeten aan dek en in de zon, terwijl het schip op zee dreef . Dat kon goed. Op de radar was binnen het bereik van 6 mijl geen enkel schip of booreiland zichtbaar, zodoende dreven we zonder zeilen en de motor was uitgezet.
Een frisse duik in de Noordzee was niet zomaar van viermeter hoog het water in springen, maar er slingerde een aantal trainees via een de schoot van de ra in het water. Het was super en het water was opvallend helder ten opzicht van het binnen water in Friesland.�
Verder had ik persoonlijk wel “een strakke actie”. Ik moet om half vijf tijdens mijn waht van van 4 -8 uur het kluivernet in klimmen. Het schoot van de stagvok was geknapt. Het zeil ging naar beneden en moest worden in gepakt. Dat was een karwijtje voor mij tijdens de derde nacht en Stavanger was inzicht. Het schip voer aan de wind en de windkracht was een ruime 3 richting de vier. Ik �moest mezelf in een tuigje hijsen en aan dat tuigje zaten haken waarmee ik mezelf vast maakte aan de verstaging. Het zeilen doeken was een lastig werkje, zo zou ik direct de “schoonheids prijs” krijgen. Niet dus. Ik dacht vast is vast, en zo was het ook.�
Nog een leuk gegeven, aanboord praten we als trainees al met elkaar via nautische begrippen, zo is overstag gaan: brassen. Met brassen worden de ra’s omgekeerd. De ra’s zeilen worden bij een overstag als laatste op nieuwe gezet. De ra’s zijn functioneel, zo drukken die het schip om.�

De wind ging er gisteren helemaal uit en kwam pas deze morgen weer een beetje terug. Iedereen leek weer eens sneller te drijven dan wij.. en zo leek onze goede start te verwateren in een drijf feest naar het zuid zuid oosten. Het waypoint is nog 85 mijl bij ons vandaan en de wind lijkt nog niet veel toe te nemen, tussen de 3 en de 8 knopen is waar we mee aan het spelen zijn.�We hebben wel kleine cakejes gebakken deze middag!�Om ons heen lijken een aantal schepen het ook wat benauwd te krijgen in de race en verschijnen zeilen die buiten de rating staan. Gijs en ik hebben allebei een verkoudheid die ook niet in de rating zit!

We started off from Stavanger harbour around 12.30 AM. Some of the new
volunteers climbed to the top of the mast to enjoy the view, others took
pictures off all the other sailboats and people watching. We where supposed
to start at 18.00 AM, but the entire crew was so excited that they couldn't
wait until the time passed 18.00. In a enormous speed we raced to the start
line before anyone else! That resulted in that we started before we where
allowed to. The hole 1.5 minute we passed before we where supposed to, cost
us an entire 360 turn around as a penalty. After that, the crew was so crazy
to get in for the lost time, so we used an extra sail, a special "stunt
sail" to get more wind and speed. All this made an exciting start at
Morgenster for the new volunteers. After the dinner we got told that our
speed was good and we had a great course.

De wind nam afgelopen nacht weer toe en dus hebben wij het grootzeil gereefd en hebben wij de grote kluiver voor de kleine verwisseld. Het was een hoop werk voor een kleine bemanning, maar met een plan en de wil om er een succes van te maken werd dit het ook. We zeilen nu op Terschilling wind is nu meest zuid en kracht 4/5.
Op zee is het duidelijk oktober, koud en nat. Naar huis zeilen is een nieuwe ervaring voor de groep. We zeilen naar het einde van de trip en zij vragen zich af wanneer we in Enkhuizen aan zullen komen. Niets staat vast in het zeilen, maar dat wel, vrijdag middag zijn wij weer terug in Enkhuizen, hopelijk met een mooie tussen stop op Terschelling.

42 46.86 N 009 03.39 N De barbecue was een succes. Dicht bij een onbewoond eilandje en een strand op het zuiden, werd er eerst gezwommen, door sommigen zelfs de afstand van het schip naar het strand, 300 meter! Daarna het bootje vol geladen met barbecue, eten en drinken. Gelukkig ligt er overal wat sprokkelhout, zodat er een kampvuur gemaakt kan worden, want na de geweldige zonsondergang, wordt het heel erg koud. Na een hamburger, die aan het rooster van de barbecue blijft hangen, krijgen we perfecte gamba’s, sparerib, champignon/groente spies en een tonijn macaroni salade. Aan de worstjes en de maïs zijn we helemaal niet toe gekomen. Dat werd de lunch van de volgende dag. Een kleine tegenvaller was, dat we die dag, Zondag, om 08.00 uur moesten vertrekken en dat er, jammer genoeg geen wind stond. Toen hebben we alle papiertjes met alle namen van elk touw, zeil, knoop etc aan boord, gepakt en per wacht goed geoefend waar- en wat alles is en waar het voor dient. Een dag op de motor is niet leuk, dus zijn we om 22.10 voor anker gegaan in de baai bij Muros. Een vissers dorp/stadje. Liggend aan een heuvel, met nauwe steegjes, gietijzeren balkonnetjes, met varens en mos begroeide trappen. Helaas vinden we hier in de haven weer die stinkende visfarms . Vandaag staat er een zuid westelijke wind, dus we wachten morgen af, dan zal de wind (volgens onze weerplaatjes) noordwest zijn. Dus hebben we met z’n allen de verjaardag van Sophie, nu dus 25 jaar!!!! uitbundig kunnen vieren. Veel ballonnen, een soort hoedje, zelf gemaakt door de groep, van onze oude kluiver, met een wens van een ieder, T-shirt, bloemen en veel kusjes, want in Nederland geven we er drie, maal veertien…….een Spaanse port, een kaasje uit de omgeving, een land wijntje en een heuse Spaanse ham aan been, dun gesneden en dit alles opgeluisterd door vier, als dames verklede, jonge mannen! Morgen is het weer vroeg dag. Dus een groot gedeelte van de groep ligt nu op bed. Ontbijt 08.00 uur, aan dek om 09.00 uur, het bootje aan boord, anker thuis en 10.00 uur,hopelijk met een noordwestelijk windje, op weg naar Vigo. Crew Jeannette - Tecla

43 21.728 N 008 14.671 W Door een het hoge drukgebied boven Engeland, hebben de gebieden aan de rand van dat hoog last van erg veel wind. Dus wij hadden een dag 7 tot 9 beaufort wind. En zelfs onze beschutte baai zag er wit uit. Het anker wacht lopen in de nacht was spannend, bij elke rukwind leek het schip zich te willen verplaatsen. Op de gps kregen we snelheden van 0.6 knopen door, maar onze positie op de elektronische kaart en de peilingen op de haven lichten bleven gelukkig het zelfde. Onze Zwitserse jongeren groep "La Brigantine" heeft naast het zeilen, een eigen leer-werk programma, dus deze dag werd gevuld met evaluaties en nieuwe leer-werk doelstellingen. Aan het eind van de dag nog even met het bootje naar de wal, een hele onderneming in die golfslag, om aan de wal te genieten van zon en strand. Van het thuis front (Jet) horen we dat de Race of the Classics Young Professionals van start is gegaan met een oostelijk windje 2 a 3. Ipswich is het doel en van Loes, die alle logboeken op dit moment op onze site zet, dat de eerste nachtvorst gemeld wordt in Nederland! Op onze weerkaarten zien we de lage drukgebieden al weer aan komen, nu met een veel grotere omvang en ook veel zuidelijker overtrekkend. Wij besluiten om vrijdag dan ook de zeilen te reven, op weg naar La Coruna, om voor de westelijke winden, rond Kaap de Finisterre te zijn. Een prachtige tocht, de kustlijn is hier fantastisch met z’n gouden stranden, rotsen en witte stadjes. We liggen nu in de marina van Fontan, dicht bij Sada, een half uur met de bus naar La Coruna, aan de visserij kade en dat is heerlijk, geen ankerwacht! Voetballen naast het schip, gewoon slapen voor iedereen. Ook worden alle haren geknipt! Bij een enkeling, hoofden zelfs totaal kaal geschoren! Nu moeten we wel richting warmte en zon! Vandaag wordt een dag van boodschappen en schip poetsen, vanmiddag strand en barbecue, zodat we morgen weer op weg kunnen, richting Vigo. Crew Jeannette
TECLA - 14 october
43 39.312 N 08 04.030 W Ria de Cedeira, iets ten oosten van La Coruna, noord Spanje, daar liggen we voor anker. Gister, eind van de middag, zijn we binnen gelopen. Met een toenemende oosten wind en uiteindelijk met een snelheid van 11 knopen in de "buien", kwamen we op de kust afgedonderd. 11 Knopen betekend voor de Tecla: er moet zeil af! En dat werd dus even hard werken, zo vlak voor ons doel. Het weerbericht had het al de hele tijd over een "gale force 8" bij de Kaap van Finisterre, nou die stond er dus ook even, vlak voor we er waren. Het is alsof de wind hier door invloed van land en zee, "funnelt", iets wat ook op de Canaren veel voorkomt, op eens heel veel wind, zonder dat er een echte weersverandering te zien is. De kust is hier stijl, met opvallend veel naaldbos. Er zijn berggeiten en het ziet er vrij onbegaanbaar uit. Als we tussen de rotsen doorvaren, komen we in een zeer beschutte kom, aan de monding van de droge rivier de Cedeira, er ligt een vrij nieuwe strekdam in de haven, die er voor zorgt dat er bijna geen golfslag is. In de haven liggen de typische Spaanse, gekleurde vissersschepen, de meeste zijn trawlers, netten achter het schip, en veel kleine vissersbootjes. Jachten zijn er niet, het toeristen seizoen is hier voorbij. Hier hebben Jan en ik in de zomer van 1981 rond gezworven, van baai naar baai, van terrasje naar terrasje. Er is veel veranderd, de boten zijn groter, van staal, niet meer van hout en minder kleurrijk, de havens zijn groter, op de stranden liggen geen vissersbootjes maar zonaanbidders, langs het strand staan grote gebouwen voor de massa toerist, die we nu gelukkig niet tegen komen. Maar als we even op een terrasje zitten te genieten van de zon, is toch het allermooiste van Spanje nog steeds sterk aanwezig, het leven met elkaar op straat. Geweldig! De krioelende kinderen op een plein, met allemaal moeders (af en toe een vader, we zijn vroeg, 17.00 uur), oma’s en opa’s, iedereen praat of speelt met iedereen, jong en oud, geweldig! Ik kan hier uren naar kijken! Maar morgen gaan we weer een baai verder. Jeannette - Crew Tecla
TECLA - 12 oktober
46 16.523 N 007 25.412 W De avond is weer gevallen, het is druk om ons heen, allemaal grote vrachtschepen, op weg naar het Kanaal. Gister avond vielen onze zeil lichten uit en moesten we met een gewoon toplicht verder, dat was even heel vervelend, voor de wind en een akelige hobbelige zee, vanwege het continentale plat, (hier komt de Atlantische oceaan aangedenderd met een diepte van meer dan 2000 meter en opeens ligt daar Europa met een diepte van nog geen 100 meter! Dat geeft bijna altijd zeezieken.) met allemaal visserschepen en grote "jongens" om ons heen en geen voorrang kunnen vragen. Vanmorgen bleek, dat de elektra draden, door het gewiebel, los geraakt waren. Een werkje voor Jan, in het zonnetje, gewapend met bril, tang en nieuwe klemmen was het na de middag weer gefikst. Nu kijken we weer trots naar onze rood boven groen en zien we, aan de omliggende schepen, dat ze goed herkenbaar zijn, want iedereen wijkt keurig voor ons. De wind is ondertussen gedraaid naar het oosten, kracht 3 a 4, we zijn de akelige zee kwijt, het is half bewolkt en de dag is vrij rustig verlopen. Tijdens de workshop hebben we gegijpt met nog eens alle uitleg die daar bij hoort. Daarna was het zeil-tassen-naai-tijd, ofwel, iedereen zat in het zonnetje en probeert er iets leuks van te maken. Ook was het de eerste dag, dat de drie jongeren, die altijd bij het eten helpen, hun eerste maaltijd zelf moesten maken. Dat werd dus oma macaroni met sla en warme pudding na. En wees eerlijk, wat je zelf maakt, smaakt ook veel beter! Morgen gaan we voor de eigengemaakte pizza, met een nieuwe chef de cuisine en drie snij/kneed hulpen. Nu is er weer totale rust aan boord, de meerderheid slaapt, er wordt zacht gebabbeld, thee en koffie gedronken. Een ieder die ooit mee gevaren heeft, kent dat gevoel van het begin van de nacht, iedereen kan gerust gaan slapen, er wordt over U gewaakt. Jeannette - Crew

47 54.610 W 005 23.856 W Een week, al weer, verder. Wat hebben we gedaan? We zijn inderdaad naar Dartmouth geweest, met een naar zuidoost draaiend windje. Het blijft een prachtig binnenkomen. Een nauwe invaart met aan alle kanten rotsen en kleine burchtjes. En dan een verbreding met aan weerzijden gekleurde huizen tegen de helling aangeplakt. Omdat het buiten nogal woei en vanuit een totaal verkeerde richting, zuid west 7 a 8, hebben we ons de tijd gegund om hier van al dit moois iets langer te genieten. Dus na een bezoek bij het vvv-kantoor konden we aan de slag. ( Wist je, dat Agatha Christy hier in de omgeving heeft gewoond!) Met de stoom trein een klein rondje Devon, te voet langs de kust, het museum, voetballen in het park, iedereen heeft genoten. Aangezien de weerberichten toch laten zien dat Ierland echt met het slechte weer blijft zitten, nu weer met een rest tropische storm, besluiten we nog een stop in Engeland te maken, Falmouth, om daarna de oversteek te wagen over de Golf van Biscay, richting Spanje en zon! In Falmouth is de gebroken hand nog even door een arts goed bekeken, grote boodschappen aan boord, plus diesel en water, een scheurtje in het kluiver beslag gerepareerd, een laatste avond stappen en internetten en zo waren we allemaal klaar voor de langere oversteek. Dus hebben we Engeland verlaten, onder een prachtige sterren hemel met melkweg en komt ons gedicht weer boven drijven, want dit is toch wel het aller mooist, de wind, het zingen van het schip, alle zeilen op, een knik in de schoot, alle wachten weer paraat, een noordwester wind, beetje motregen (nu), een snelheid variërend van 6 tot 9.8 knopen, we genieten. 49 40.1N 002 40.9 W - Weer onderweg. We hadden even wat oponthoud, maar we varen weer. Op Alderney had een van onze jongeren nl de mooiste foto van z'n leven willen maken maar vergat daarbij, dat hij op een rots stond die 7 meter stijl naar beneden liep. Tja, en toen hij dus die stap naar achter deed, werd hem dat bijna fataal! Resultaat: een gecompliceerde breuk in z'n hand en een jaap in z'n arm. Het eerste is verholpen met een stalen pen, het andere met enkele hechtingen. Omdat er op Alderney op dat momentgeen dokter aanwezig was die dit allemaal kon herstellen, mocht hij vliegen naar Guernsey. Na een verblijf van bijna 2 dagen in het ziekenhuis, is hij weer aan boord, dat hij niet op z'n mondje gevallen was, hebben we geweten, iedereen wilde natuurlijk het verhaal wel 10 maal horen en het mooiste woord, tussen al die rappe zinnen frans was: You where lucky! Dat hadden alle mensen die hem geholpen hebben wel duizend maal gezegd! En vandaag, zondag, poets dag, (toch maar even voor we vertrekken) heeft hij alweer de stofzuiger taak op zich genomen en dat ging prima. Poets-dag is ook verwen dag, dus gezamenlijk een appeltaart gebakken . En toen we toch aan het bakken waren ook maar een focaccia (brood) met kleine tomaatjes. Bij het zien van al dat lekkers en met name de stukken ham die werden gekookt, waren de jongelui niet meer uit de keuken weg te slaan. Toen ik echter vertelde, dat het dierendag was, 4 oktober, en de ham dus voor Nyske was, kwam iedereen wel even vertellen, dat dat wel erg veel was voor een hond en dat dierendag een verzinsel zou zijn, in Frankrijk en Zwitserland kennen ze dat niet. Voor alle niet Nederlandse mensen, die dit lezen, vier dierendag, 4 oktober, verwen je huisdier, of ga eens extra wandelen naar het strand, en vergeet die ham, dat is natuurlijk ongezond voor een hond. En nu zijn we onderweg naar Dartmouth, de stad aan de monding van de rivier de Dart. TECLA - 1 oktober
49 27.07 N 002 31.77 W - Vandaag zijn we inderdaad een eiland verder gegaan, we zijn nu op Guernsey. Voor de wind, noordelijk 3 bft, met een hobbelig zee-tje, gingen we, met een snelheid variërend van 3.6 tot 9 knopen, vol tuig , in een tijd van 4.5 uur, van anker plek naar anker plek. We liggen nu iets ten zuiden van de grote haven van St. Peters Port, Havelet Bay. Ons uitzicht is de stad, kasteel "Cornet", een wit strand en buiten het kommetje, vele eilanden, waaronder: Herm en Sark. Op Guernsey staan fantastische villa’s, kasteeltjes , enorme kerken, keurig aangelegde bloemperken tussen straten, bloemige tierelantijn gietijzeren wacht plaatsen bij de bus, zo te zien een heel rijk eiland. Morgen maar uitzoeken hoe het met deze rijke geschiedenis zit. We hebben nu alleen even wat boodschappen gedaan en het vvv kantoor nog niet gevonden. De mensen zelf zijn zeer gereserveerd, kijken je niet aan en hebben haast. Het einde van een druk toeristen seizoen? Het varen rond de Kanaal eilanden met dit weer, vandaag weer T-shirt temperaturen, is vakantie, de stemming aan boord dus ook! Het zeil zetten en weer weg nemen, gaat steeds vlotter. Een ieder heeft nu wel zijn of haar plekje gevonden, dat maakt het voor anker gaan op zeil gemakkelijk. En voor allen die willen weten of Nyske van boord mag….dat moeten we morgen nog even goed uitzoeken, want het douane gebouw hebben we ook nog niet gevonden. Jeannette - Crew aan boord Tecla
TECLA - 30 september
En het is gelukt, helemaal zeilend, we zijn op Alderney. Het meest noordelijke eiland van de Kanaal Eilanden, 8.36 mijl ofwel 11.61 km ver van het vaste land van Frankrijk. Een eiland waar je binnen zes dagen kunt trouwen, waar ze een echte eigen president en regering hebben, waar je belasting vrije winkels hebt en dat niet tot de EU behoort?!
En toch is het o zo Engels. De tuinen, de huizen, de gebloemde gordijnen. Het is nu een rustig eiland. De meeste veerboten varen niet meer, dus je kunt er nu alleen nog maar per vliegtuigje naar toe, van af een van de grotere eilanden. Of je neemt net als wij, je eigen boot en vaart er, met een gemiddelde snelheid van 6 knopen, stroompje mee, binnen 14 uur, tijdens een onbewolkte, maar met sterren- en maan nacht rustig, vanaf Yarmouth naar toe. Vannacht om 03.30 lagen we voor anker en na een biertje, als je geen anker wacht had, in bed. Vanochtend waren we dus allemaal iets later met het ontbijt, om daarna het eiland te verkennen. We hebben het wel getroffen met het weer! Weer droog , zonnig en geen wind. Dus werd er na het ontbijt nog wel even gezwommen door de jongeren. En natuurlijk perfect voor de bemanning om toch nog even een paar uurtjes te klussen, de voorstag in het vet, de machine kamer opruimen, touwen bekleden en de eeuwig durende was natuurlijk, dus de Tecla was weer een grote waslijn. Alleen Nyske - de scheepshond -was zeer ontevreden. Hier moeten honden en katten aan boord, op- en eigenlijk zelfs, binnen blijven. Dat laatste hebben we natuurlijk niet gedaan, het was al erg genoeg, dat het bijbootje, met de nu perfect lopende nieuwe motor, zomaar zonder haar vertrok. Morgen gaan we op weg naar Geurnsey (een kleine 20 mijl ofwel 36.5 km), en als we het goed gelezen hebben, mag ze daar wel van boord! Crew Jeannette
TECLA - 29 september
De zondag bracht veel zon, geen wind een dagje genieten van Isle of Wight. Het enige echte spannende was, dat de buitenboord motor het echt niet wilde doen en er dus geroeid moest gaan worden. Gelukkig zijn er vier roeispanen aan boord ! Maandag was dus de dag om opzoek te gaan naar een bougie. Daarom liggen we nu in de haven van Yarmouth. Een dorpje nog net aan het Solent, waar veerboten af en aan gaan van en naar Southhampton/Lymington./Porthmouth. Een echt vakantie dorp, met de iets oudere wandel/bad-gast. Iedereen kent iedereen, dus je bent hier meteen een bekend figuur, de havenmeester vroeg ook direct waar we vandaan kwamen, zo laat in het seizoen, andere jaren waren we toch veel vroeger! Het is elke keer weer fijn een beetje thuis te komen. De maandag werd verder gevuld met water tanken, harpen van de piek vervangen, boodschappen doen, crossen met de winkelkar, de grote was in de wasserette, op zoek naar de bougie en wachten op een monteur die er in "a minute "zou zijn! Nee dus. Vanmorgen zijn Jan en Gijs dan ook vroeg onderweg gegaan naar Cowes, omdat daar een echte dealer van buitenboord motoren zit, die ons of helpt aan een bougie, of aan een andere motor, omdat deze toch wel heel veel kuren krijgt en wij op de kanaal eilanden, waar we vanmiddag naar onderweg gaan, elke dag voor anker liggen met een behoorlijke stroming, waar slecht tegen in te roeien valt. Op het moment is er weer amper wind, maar toch hopen we op een noordwestelijke 4 a 5 bft die er aan komt, volgens de deskundigen. 50 44. 39 N 01 11.65 W. We zijn er! Het is niet iets om erg trots op te zijn, maar we liggen wel voor anker aan de noord kant van Isle of Wight. Gister begon de dag heel mooi en veel belovend. Een schitterende zonsopgang, om 08.00 uur alle zeilen omhoog, topzeilen incluis, anker op, een noordelijk windje, kracht 3 bft en zo begonnen we de dag met een snelheid van 4,7 knopen. Na een ontbijt met pannekoeken en een weerbericht dat het over wind 3 a 4 had, uit noordelijke richtingen, leek het een zonnige zeildag te gaan worden. Vlak langs de witte krijt kust, was het dan ook volop genieten. Iedereen was aan het pummelen, een beetje vissen, de trapjes in het wand voorzien van nieuwe bindsels, broodbakken, zonnen, alleen Jan had het iets minder fraai, hij zat in de machine kamer de laatste nieuwe pomp, die maar niet wilde aanzuigen, zuigend te krijgen (en dat is gelukt) Onze workshop was: een begin maken van het naaien van een zeil tas. Hier voor gebruiken we, onze ooit zo geliefde, grote kluiver. Aangezien het zeil totaal aan alle kanten uitgescheurd was tijdens onze laatste reis, begint het nu een nieuw leven als onder anderen zeiltas. En iedereen is er dan ook vol goede moed aan begonnen, eerst uittekenen, knippen en dan naaien, om er later een persoonlijk tintje aan te gaan geven. Onze franse deckhand/tolk Sophie, die we ontmoet hebben tijdens de TSAC race, waar ze mee voer op de franse topzeil schoener, Etoile, is al bijna klaar, bij anderen zal dat nog wel even duren. Maar ja, de wind! Na de kompas roos gerond te hebben, verdween die in het niets, dus hebben we toch maar besloten de motor te starten en door te varen naar Wight. En na weer een geweldige zonsondergang en rose maan opgang, veel noord, zuid, groene en rode tonnen hebben we anker laten vallen bij Ryde. En vanmorgen konden we genieten van weer een heerlijk zonnetje en een prachtig uitzicht, echte kasteeltjes en veel groen. Ik ben benieuwd wat deze zondag zal brengen.

TECLA - 25 September
50 54.78 N 00 46.30 Het klopt! Voor alle mensen die kijken waar we liggen, kan ik alleen maar zeggen, het klopt, we zij alleen maar overgestoken naar de andere kant van het kanaal. Om precies te zijn liggen we bij Rye. Een historische plek, wat betreft boten bouw en visserij. Als je nl. Rey in wilt varen moet je over een droogte (dat betekend dat je er alleen met hoog water in kunt) en val je in de haven bij laag water "droog". Hier werden vroeger in de modder houten vissersschepen gebouwd die veel lijken op onze loggers, zoals de Tecla. Wij liggen nu weer voor anker te wachten op de juiste stroom en het liefst ook nog de juiste wind, of gewoon: wind! Toch was het geen verloren dag. Na het ontbijt en anker op, hebben we met z'n allen het schip van binnen en buiten gepoetst. Niet iedereen is altijd even enthousiast bij dit gebeuren, maar om er toch iets leuks van te maken hebben we vers brood en cake gebakken en dat rook geweldig! Tijdens de warme chocolade met spekulaas hebben we dan ook maar besloten er een echte vakantie dag van te maken, zwemmen! Volgens Shahran was de water temperatuur nog 18 graden, dus waarom niet. Ik denk zelf, dat de thermometer te lang in de zon heeft gelegen en te kort in de emmer met water, maar dat mocht de pret niet drukken. Na een ijsje en onze overheerlijke zelfgebakken cake heeft iedereen genoten van deze late, heerlijk warme, zomerdag. Jeannette - Crew Tecla.

50 54.75 N 01 39.99 E - We liggen voor anker bij Cape Petit Blanc Nez. Het stukje Europa waar je Engeland bijna aan kan raken. En waar je ziet dat een stukje Frankrijk ook een soort witte krijt rotsen heeft. Het stukje waar allemaal veerboten heen en weer gaan, waar je elke keer weer denkt, hoeveel mensen gaan er dagelijks over dit o zo druk bevaren stuk water? Daar liggen we, aan de ene kant Frankrijk en aan de andere kant dus Engeland. De wind was weg en de stroom dreef ons alle kanten op en hier is dat dan toch even een probleem. De grote vrachtschepen, komend vanaf alle kanten gaan door deze vernauwing op eens allemaal het kanaal in, een grote snelweg, waar het marifoon verkeer niet stopt, waar elk schip zich moet melden en vertellen met hoeveel lading, aantal personen, bestemming en conditie van het schip ze onderweg zijn om permissie te krijgen door te varen. En dan moet je vaak aan vroeger denken, hoe deden ze dat toen, al zeilend, zonder marifoon, alleen vlaggen om te seinen. Daarom wachten wij morgen maar even af om over te steken, zodat iedereen goed kan zien wat we aan het doen zijn. We hopen op wat meer wind, alhoewel het weerbericht dat niet bevestigt. Vandaag hebben we drie landen in 24 uur gedaan we hadden een fantastische zonsondergang, de beginnende maan mochten we ook bewonderen, onze dag kan niet meer stuk. Crew Jeannette aan boord Tecla.

Alle zeilen staan er goed bij, de sfeer aan boord is goed, maar de snelheid is niet geweldig. Door een stationair hoogdruk gebied boven Frankrijk, hebben wij te maken met weinig wind. Het draait een beetje tussen zuid west en noord west. Onze snelheid op dit moment is 1.7 knopen en is vandaag maar heel even 5 knopen geweest. Qua zeilen zou het dus iets beter kunnen. De aandacht ligt nu hoofdzakelijk bij het wacht lopen, slapen, eten en afwassen. Gelukkig is de zee een stuk kalmer geworden en heeft bijna iedereen gegeten. Vanmiddag was de eerste work-shop, de pin rail van de bezaan. Waar zitten de touwen, hoe heten ze, hoe ze beleggen en waar dienen ze voor. De franse, nederlandse en engelse benamingen vliegen in het rond, maar we snappen uiteindelijk allemaal waar wat zit en waarom. Ons taal probleem wordt steeds kleiner, iedereen doet z'n best de ander te verstaan, soms is een woord nog wel even verwarrend, zei hij nou: mer of vert, zee of glas, maar daar kom je later wel weer achter, dat de limonade echt niet de zee in gaat We liggen wat tussen geankerde schepen door te varen, de sterren komen voorzichtig te voorschijn, we gaan weer een maanloze nacht tegemoet. - Jeannette - Crew Tecla
TECLA - 21 September
Na enkele moeilijkheden met de internet verbindingen zijn wij er weer! Deze reis zal Jet thuis zijn dus zal ik, Jannette, proberen iedereen op de hoogte te houden. Na een rondje Nederland, IJsselmeer en Wad (toch mooi, al die prielen en zee honden) zijn we gistermiddag de Noordzee op gevaren, tussen Texel en Den Helder. Door de korte golven op de Noordzee hebben we vrij veel zeezieken. Maar omdat de groep nu al een week aan boord is, is het avontuur nu ook echt begonnen en hoort het ziek zijn er gewoon bij. We zijn opweg naar Wight, maar met deze wind kan dat nog wel even duren. Op het moment hebben we windkracht 2 uit de noord west, droog en niet echt koud. We varen nog steeds naast Noord Holland, maar daar zal hopelijk vandaag verandering in komen. Jeanette - Crew Tecla

After a short stop in Portsmouth, we are now on our way for the last track towards Oostende, Belgium. In Portsmouth we met up with a Race friend of ours, Harry. We where moored alongside a very green light ship (although they are red when still in use) and he came to say hello. We also met up with one of the winners of the Baltic race, the couple that sails the Pegasus. We went to see their boat and got the grand tour. It is a very beautiful pilot cutter built for sail training.
In the morning we set out again, but there is no wind, so we are on motor. The weather has been very fine the last two days, so we just enjoyed the view of the English coast and the warm sunshine.
TECLA - 23 augustus 2009
We left our anchorage under sail. With mainsail, forestaysail and jib up, we first backed, then turned and then got the speed up. The water was totally calm, but the breeze was nice, so we soon got up to 6,5 knots. In the harbor entrance we met some crew members from the Funchal 500 race last year, they where on their yacht the 'stardust' and came to say hello. As we set out for Portsmouth, they set out for Plymouth. The day has been changeful, we have had rain, wind has been between south and north west, the sun is out now and the sunset promises to be very beautiful! Compared to the Atlantic Ocean, the water is so busy with traffic! Now we get the chance to explain the lights to Nele, Gael and the group, where we only met a few vessels on our big journey..

At noon we had to muster on deck for the red watch. We had to do watch duties like look-out, bouy watch, fire watch or helmsman or just stand bye to help the permanent crew. I had to be look-out from 2 till 3 pm but nothing happened here on the North Sea so we had a quiet watch. After this we laid down on deck because it was nice weather. The wind is from the South 4 BFT and the sun is shining. All sails up! After my watch we weared the ship to a starboard tack.

I am assigned in the blue watch from 8 to 12. I think it is the most relaxed watch there is. You can see the sunrise and sunset. And this morning we did set almost all of the sails. Together with other people from the blue watch I went up into the rig to unsecure the sails. After we came down the rig, other people from my watch set the sails by pulling the halyards and the sheets.
At 12 o'clock we were relieved by the red watch, so I had some time by myself. First I went to have lunch and after that I went to the forecastle to enjoy the nice weather and to look at the ship and way she moves through the water. After diner I had to muster again at the maindeck for the 8 to
12 watch. During our watch we had to take in all of the squaresails. When they were all clewed up we had to go into the rig again to secure the sails.
We tried to get the work done before sunset but we did not manage. The last sails were secured in the dark and we were finished just at the end of our watch. It was quite exciting to do this job.
This journey will last for more than 2 days. I have a great time on board and I enjoy this experience. Fair winds to all!!

SETTING SAIL
On Sunday the first part of the group trainees arrived in Bergen. After arrival of the last trainees on Monday we cast off to sea at 6 pm. In the evening we sailed through the fjords. All watches have been instructed during the evening and from 10 pm the sea watches started. During the night we left the fjords and went to sea north of Haugesund.
Now we are setting sail. The staysails were set quickly. The trainees of the blue watch go up the masts en prepare the topsails. They will be set soon. We have nice weather. Wind is good NW 4 BFT. Everyone starts to get used to movement of the sea. A lovely day to come.

Now we have arrived in the port of Warnemunde, Rostock. After looking forward to the voyage for weeks we are now about to start. In the evening we got introduced to our watch and our watchleader and where among many other things told about safety on board and we are starting to learn about sailing and those practical things which have to be done. It is a challenge to be around this many people and nationalities.

The race is finished! All ships are over the finish line. And just now we heard that we are 1 in our class AND over all!! We got a phone call from Holland congratulating us! The last day and a half we have been at anchor and later along a quay in Sheep Haven, near a town called Downings. Gijs and I went to get some groceries, but had to hitchhike to the next town to get the supplies we needed. I stayed behind with the dog and Gijs and Clair asked somebody for a lift. This was easily arranged! We got our stuff and they even drove us back! It was a lovely day, some of the group hiked up a mountain and the rest strolled along the beautiful beach. At night we got some visitors, relatives of Clair, and had a nice party first on board and later in the local pub! Now we are under full sail again and on our way to Ballycastle. Hope the light winds will take us there.

Land ho! And 40 miles to go! Our Irish crew jumped up and down on the foredeck as we saw the first strip of land. The midday pancakes where flying through the air and all seasickness, rain and the howling wind from a few days ago where forgotten. Now the Irish music is playing on the radio (I think other cd's are not allowed anymore..) and outside (when it doesn't rain or drizzle) Irish songs can be heard guided by someone on the guitar. We are not sure yet as to what we will do after the finish, but ham sandwiches and beers are waiting for us in one of the bays near Tory Island, where the finish is. Sarah is trying to get us all t shirts after own design with the Tecla and the race on it, as soon as we have pictures, we will post/send them! Ireland here we come!

SUN!! And cleaning day! Due to the waves we had to skip a few cleaning days, but now with all the hatches open we could throw all the dirty, wet stuff out and clean the boat, bottom to top! A cd filled with love songs was playing loudly, the hallway was filled with singing Irish girls with mops, bin bags, cleaning products and the vacuum cleaner as microphone! We are still sailing down wind, now with the forestay sail on the windward side, rocking a little to much by the waves that are left off the last few days. That did not stop the yoga class from taking place though! And it certainly does not stop the dolphins from coming alongside and giving a show almost 4 times per day! Winds have decreased and with them the waves. So we set the mainsail with two reefs in it this morning and took the reefs out this afternoon and changed the small jib, for the big jib. The weather is still cold, grey, drizzling, but the spirits on board are good. Singing during the day watch and discussions during the night. As we set the big jib today, we where accompanied by some dolphins playing in the waves. They had some small ones with them that jumped out of the water with every breaking wave and sometimes seemed to look at us smiling. When the dishes are done we might set the topsail to keep up the speed if the wind decreases even more. - Crew Tecla, between Halifax - Belfast

Home sweet home - 30-31 of July
Last 24 hours all ship crew and trainees all the night were on their feet. It was because of that, that there were left not very much till the end of the race, but wind was not very good for us and every minute we had to be prepared for tacking and very fast come to battle station.
And in the middle of the day we have had tacked twice and in the afternoon of 30 of July we have crossed the finish line of the race. That evening the sunset was incredible. The rain was coming and we saw sun between horizon of the sea and rain clouds. It was amazing!!!!
Everybody in the ship just stopped and they were enjoying of the sunset... After that has come the final results – Christian Radich in the class A – FIRST!!!!!!
After that Captain gave order to pull up the sails and last hours till we reach my hometown Klaipeda was started. In the last our watch (00.00-04.00) we were so busy that I haven't felt when all preparation jobs where finished – all night we where preparing ship for hers staying in harbor. In that watch we had nice surprise – Grete and Vivi has made pancakes in Norwegian.By the way – this night was the first night when I had possibility to feel what does it means to be in the sea when the rain has come...
After interesting day and short watch we all went to sleep. An I awoke then, when I had possibility to say -”Welcome to Lithuania!” :)

We really are going towards Ireland and the weather wanted to be the first to tell us! Yesterday the barometer started dropping like in a free fall and within a few hours the winds increased up to 7bf. We had already reeved the mizzen and as we put in the reef of the main, we decided not to set it at all. Today nothing much changed. Winds are strong and waves have build up. The Tecla danced up and down the waves. During our day watch we read each other fairy tails from Ireland and ghost stories from Scotland. Although out at sea the thought of a haunted house is not as scary as when at land. - Crew Tecla

12,4! 12,4 knots!!! Surfing down the waves, James hanging on to the wheel and the whole watch clinging on to their seats when we hit the 12,4 knots last night. Crazy weather and enough wind to take the topsails down and still do a comfortable 9 to 10 knots and not throw people out of their bunks! Someone said 'this is what I expected with an Atlantic crossing, waves all around and strong winds'. Well the waves have decreased and the wind is down to 4 to 5 beaufort and this still feels like an atlantic crossing. We passed the halfway mark and are now making nice progress towards Ireland, still a little over 1000 miles to go. After an eventful night the ship was totally silent during the day. As we have everybody on standby for taking down the topsails and reeving, so they get their sleep while they can, now for the first time this trip, there was nobody out on deck but the watch that was on. That did not stop us from getting into all sorts of discussions and eating a whole lot of gummy bears!

Last night was a windless but certainly not boring night! The waves kept rocking us as we talked about what used to scare us and what still does, about banshee's in Ireland and de kinderverslinder in Holland, we talked about the shifting solar systems and stars, (why learn them if they are going to be different in 1000 years..?) and kids names (after 20 minutes somebody asked whether this was something someone thought about in advance..). During the day we saw a lot of dolphins! They where common dolphins, but there was nothing common about their playful swimming and jumping around! They stayed for some time and gave everybody a good chance for pictures. And today was also cleaning day, the ship smells nice and clean again. And as the weather is very good, all the doors and hatches are open to let the fresh air in.
A small flu is on board and it has already made a lot of victims, me included. It comes suddenly and passes quick, but the last two days I was not up for writing the blog, hopefully the flu ended with me, no new victims so far..

Radich Watch Up date: 8-12 Watch 30th July between Turku- Klaipeda
This morning we awoke with nervous anticipation of what was going to happen on our watch. The previous night we learnt that we were still first in our class, and that the finish time for the race had been brought forward due to the adverse winds. As it turned out we had very little time to wait as we were waiting the tall ship behind us to tack. When she did this we tacked to cover her. And so began the endless trimming of the sails and halyards to make sure that the boat was travelling at the fastest speed possible. Once this was finally over we just had to sit and wait for the end of the race and for the commands from the captain.
This was a long wait with very little activity as the wind did not vary very much. So little trimming of the large square sails that power the tall ship along through the water was required. At 1600 the captain gathered us on the main deck an told us that we would have to wait and see what the results of the race were.

We just wanted to share with you the best memories from the sunset yesterday, we climbed up to the top of the main mast where we stayed for approximately 45 minutes. The view was more than marvellous the open shimmering sea quite with no other ships on the horizon and the key to this view was the other ships on the horizon. We were watching it from the start to the finish with people sitting on the yards talking taking thousands of pictures or just in silence enjoying the end of the day from the birds view.
In the evening before the sunset we did even common titanic which means some friends at once were standing on the bowsprit.
Amazing moments that connect people. During the night we were supposed to tack, so everyone was expected to be awake and ready to do their duty with the ropes but fortunately nothing like that happened. We managed to sail within the whole night and then after quick breakfast we did the fastest tacking the captain had ever seen. Then the second after 3 min and all the tall ships were behind us. We are first now passing the light house at the end of Gotland. Lying on the foredeck practicing the winners song just in case of the event, the warms us, even if we are in half dreamy dead, because of the murderer’s game which started an hour ago. Let’s see who wins!

Last night when the race results came in the Captain told us that we are still first in our class which is good to hear, we celebrated with applause and then went onto our night watches. News also followed that due to the winds and the fact that many of the ships had not yet passed GOTLAND the race would finish early so that we could grantee all of the ships were able to be in port for the events in Klaipeda
Sailing during the night was good and we had easy watches, allowing for fun and games. One game that was played was the bear game. In this game to people pretend to be PARENTS and give birth to a baby bear. However the parents have to try and stop the baby from being born, whilst the baby has to try to be born. In reality a person has to push through two people who are lying on top of each other and trying to stop the person pushing through the two of them.

One would think 10 days into sailing the North Atlantic, that we would all have our personal baseballs and be firing them at some random wall a la 'Cooler King' in The Great Escape. Not so. There are moments when one needs time out - shower, sleep, bare necessities - or maybe an hour to read and catch up on one's journal. But days seem to be filled with sail, sustenance and ship management.
The elements are our master. At 8am this morning the wind picked up suddenly which meant all hands on deck to reef the main and mizzen sails - even those who had just come off watch. Sail adjustment continued throughout the day and we just finished a short time ago putting up the main and mizzen top sails with the most beautiful sunset as a backdrop and the moon rising over the water.
The simple things are definitely to the fore - whales, dolphins, jelly fish and even the glowing algae which ignites the water at night are a daily occurrence though no less exciting or intriguing for their frequency. Delicious curries and salads courtesy of our talented chef Jet (Tecla recipe book to follow - hopefully!). Jannette's freshly baked cinnamon and raisin bread (yum yum). 'Boga' (aka boat yoga)to stretch out aching limbs. But who could forget the 'craic' - the fun and laughter on board as the crew really starts to work together and communicate with each other.
Something alchemical is happening on this beautiful ship, and although thoughts of family and friends drift towards home we still have half an ocean to cross and the excitement of the competition!

This time a day on Tecla during the TSAC written by Paulina, trainee from Bermuda
We are all getting to know our way around the ropes even at night now. The topsails went up again at day break as we oomed along at 9 knots. Neiske the dog was taken below last night, she normally is tucked behind the helm in all weathers, but last night was a treat to keep her warm. We miss her when she is not in her normal place so it's good when day breaks and up she comes. A busy ship as always, including sewing some sails, whippings, and loads of songs from the seven Irish Ship mates. The Irish can sign and play the guitar, and joke and laugh a lot. Can't imagine what it will be like to sail into their home town with them all.... Settling down for the night now, checking all the trim, will the top sails have to come down? Will the wind shift NW as predicted and we will have to tack. I think I will keep my sea boots on for a while when I go down below after my watch. Another day on Tecla and we are number one again today in our class. We hear daily about the fleet who are racing with us, but we can't see them.

From Tuesday 28th July - news from the 4 - 8 Watch, Tacking, Napping and learning
We wake up at 0330 and started our watch at 0400, we saw a beautiful sunrise whilst members of the watch stood look out I had safety watch (which involves checking the ship for fires and making sure that all is well below decks). Some people from our watch made presentations about their countries, so we learnt something about Italy, Finland, Lithuania and France. After that we took a nap, then the Bosun told everyone that we we’re taking and should take our stations. Following the tack the Captain said that it went very well and that we should be happy with our current placing in the race.

Today Nele is 100 days on board of the Tecla! A small celebration and a special desert, rice pudding. She says she still remembers the start of her journey as if it where yesterday. As she was reading trough her diary she kept during this trip, she laughed about a gap during the Biscay crossing where she was sick and could not bring herself to write anything; and she misses those who have traveled with her and have become her friends. She does not yet want to think about leaving, lets leave that until we get to Belfast.
Last night we had some petrels on board. During a tack we turned on the deck lights and they came flying at it! Luckily they where fine and gone as soon as the light where turned of. During the day we did our first real workshop. We started of with the history of the Tecla and the fishing loggers of Holland and ended with a walk around the ships pointing out the ropes and sails and use of them all. It was a pleasant day. 28 Jul - 8 to 12 Watch - Day three - A night of racing, tacking and continued learning
Today we woke up at 0700 in time for breakfast. The watch started at 0800 where our first task was to tighten some of the sails. As we were so fast at this task we started to learn some of the important knots that are required for the ship.
This turned into a bit of fooling around when Chris, our mentor tied our hands together with ropes linked together like two parts of a chain. We had to try and escape from this, which led to many interesting attempts that failed.
That took even the “smartest” of us at least half an hour before we were begging for help. There was some more problem solving before we had lunch. The captain let us know that we were in first place in our class in the race, yeah!

The nightwatch was filled with scary stories. During the day we had discussed fortunetellers and some of the stories gave us chills down our spines, but at night we talked about pirates. Real pirates, that live now a days. The setting was perfect, it was misty, cold and the wind kept changing in direction and force. And then all of a sudden we heard a fog horn. The vessel had already come up on the radar, but hearing it gave us the creeps! It came closer and closer and seemed to come straight at us. But then at three miles it changed course and went behind us. At two and a half miles we saw their lights and silent as a big whale, they set of in a different direction. Tonight we might try and read some ghost stories to kill the time, until the wind returns. - Crew Tecla between Halifax and Belfast

Monday, 27 July 2009 4 to 8 - The 4-8 watch woke up about 3.30 a.m. to get ready for our first morning watch. Everyone was sleepy and only half wake. We changed over on the main deck with the 12-4 watch, had some food from the mess. The look out went to the front of the shop for one hour before they changed. The safety watch walks around the ship twice every hour checking for any possible fire. The safety watch then changes every hour. We proceeded by climbing the mast and unpacking the main sail and afterwards we repacked it for practice. We also learnt how to set the sails and the names of some of the endless amounts of ropes. We were taught what ‘tacking’ was and how to do it as at first it seems to be quite complicated but it turns out to be rather easy. I was even allowed to steer the ship which was an amazing experience, I had to follow a course of 090 degrees which is much harder than it sounds. Finally we changed watch with the 8-12 watch on the main deck and afterwards we had a delicious breakfast. Following breakfast some people tried to get some sleep or discussed with others the different cultures they come from and the music they enjoy. At 10.30 a.m. we had a talk with the captain where everyone should be positioned when the race begins. When the race started we let down the sails and pulled on many heavy ropes. We passes the start line quite fast and now we have a good position in the race. At the moment we are surrounded de dozens of other tall ships which gives us an amazing view, plus we are always comparing our position and speed with the other ships. At the moment we are also sailing upwind which means we will be constantly beating against the wind which will require a lot of work as the boat will be frequently tacking/turning which means we have to brace/turn the yards and re-trim the sails. Luckily the weather is still very good and quite sunny. Lets hope all continues for the rest of the race!!

27th June - An update from the 12 - 4 Watch - The Race has started
The race has started!
Yesterday we left Turku and sailed out to sea. I was starting to feel afraid about sea sickness, but what can I say now...I feel not very bad, but not very good at all!
Today in the morning 3.00-4.00 I was doing look-out. It was amazing!!!!! I had a possibility to see, how the sun was raising up and the new day was coming.
After a few hours of sleep, we all were woken up, because we had to cross the starting line. A lot of tall ships were around us and in the short breaks after doing some trainee jobs we had the possibility to enjoy the beautiful (again :) ) view around us.
In our watch time we had our instructor briefing about our position at sea, an interesting lesson about knot’s and...how to pull up and pull down the sails. They all are very huge and they look very, very nice from inside the ship and the from outside.
After some time, the captain was doing a briefing, where he said, that we have crossed line as he expected and we all are very happy about this!
Now we have some free time, I think I use it for sweet afternoon sleep...because everybody from the crew is saying, that for the next few days will not have a lot of possibilities to do it.. :)

The 26 June - an update from the 12 - 4 watch
It's been quite a day today at Christian Radich and we haven´t even finished for for today!
This morning we got our last good nights sleep as we started the real work today, which meant dividing us into three watches. From now on there´s going to be hammocks hanging from the ceiling every hour of the day with grumpy, tired people inside them who have given their best in keeping the amazing ship in action, clean and safe.
We started the day with important themes like safety on board. The experienced crew also took us through a quick history of Christian Radich and explained the whole function of the ship. The trainees went through an evacuation exercise and we got to try on A-class life jackets and survival suits. At 12 o´clock we finally left Turku and millions of waving hands as enthusiastic viewers by the river Aura and on the islands wished us safe winds. Harriet said she felt like a celebrity waving back at them.
After the meal I was to overcome my worst fear: the fear of heights. The trainees got to climb up the rigging one by one and hang on top of the yard waiting for the others to reach it too. I think it must have been one of the most frightening experiences of my life! I kept going on with tears in my eyes and tried to manage my shaking feet. Afterwards I felt proud of what I had achieved and everyone else seemed to have enjoyed the exercise as well :).
I´m now waiting for my 12 to 4 watch to start and listen to the snoring from the hammocks as the trainees prepare themselves for a long night. Excited...

Race Day - Updates from the 8 - 12
Today is the starting day for the race. Everybody was excited from the early morning, good weather then not too strong winds, good words from the captain which encouraged us to do out best to prepare all of the sails and get ready for the start line.
I was so lucky to have the 8 – 12 watch which allowed me to help with setting the sails – it was more than awesome to be one of the few at the top of the masts and while working to enjoy the other ships which were close to us.
Everyone was getting closer to the start line, we couldn’t be too fast, just not to cross the line before the mid day start, but also we wanted to be very close to the start time even if we had an 20 minute start window – this we managed!
It was much greater than I even expected crossing the start line at 12:02:30 seems more then perfect doesn’t it? The whole crew took part in setting the sails and pulling on the ropes (even the cook) then with the great time, speed and big smiles we could take thousands of pictures of the others who were BEHIND US !
These memories will be in my mind forever - what a spectacular event!
So many huge ships with all sails set – so close to each other, all trying to be the first across the line.
Well, the direction of the wind is not the best for Christian Radich now, but we will do our best to keep the first place. There is a lot to do over the next few days and nights but we have to remember also that the most important thing is the good atmosphere of the event – so keep your fingers crossed for the Christian Radich and her international crew.

Sunday, 26 Juli 4 to 8 Watch - Leaving Turku feeling like a VIP
We left Turku around noon. It was amazing how many people were on the shore waving to us. The sea was full of small boats following us from all around and you could see tall masts of ships across the horizon. Even the president of Finland was there giving her greetings! I have never felt this famous before.
The first lunch onboard was such a thrilling experience: bread, raspberry jam, and Norwegian got cheese…yummy!! The most terrifying moment in my whole life was when we were supposed to climb up the mast. I have never been so afraid of heights before especially when we looked down onto the rolling waves although the support of the other trainees and the crew kept me alive. Climbing back down onto the deck was a lot easier than climbing up, and next time I might climb ‘even’ higher.
I had my first watch at 4pm. My special duty was to look out across the horizon for possible danger objects such as other large boats, buoys and fishing nets. If you spot something you have to ring an old-fashioned bell in order to warn the helmsman at the stern of the ship. We also learned to coil ropes and how to brace the yards (turn them).
We completed a lot of training so that we would be well prepared for the race tomorrow and win again!!

Sunday dinner is just over. We all had one beer, one special Sunday beer, and later on maybe a Sunday cigar for those who want to smoke. Today was a calm day. Last night was when the exiting stuff happened. First at 10 pm the sheet of the topsail broke, which meant it had to come down. In the morning the of going watch discovered a small gap in the mainsail so, that had to come down. And so again after lunch we pulled up the (repaired) mainsail and the topsail. We have lost the gulfstream. The water is now 14.5 degrees celcius.. brrr!! Outside is not to cold, a bit damp, but very nice when the sun comes out. So nice that there was a yoga class going on on the main deck, and even in the rolling seas it was relaxing, or so I heard.. Crew Tecla, between Haliafx and Belfast

26 Juli 09 - From the 8 - 12 Watch - Day 2
After a breakfast brunch we had emergency stations and fire drills and it was funny to see everyone trying to put on the lifejackets.
We left the port with the help of a Finish tug boat named “Fart” to the cheers of the crowd, and along with the rest of the Tall Ships 2009 Baltic Fleet left the fabulous host post of Turku. Sounding a salute to the city we were all nearly deafened by the ship’s horn.
We were then shown around the ship and told about the rules of the ship. In the afternoon we had our first climb up the rigging, which for some was a very emotional experience, but great fun none the less. This was done to the sound of trumpets and the waving of the boats around us – making this an experience you never forget. The watch system also started with a gentle breaking in, including an introduction to the sails and the watches already starting to get competitive – at the time of posting this message we have just 30 minutes before we start our first watch ! 25 Juli 09 - From the 8 - 12 Watch - Day 1
Arrived at the Christian Radich in the morning all very nervous. We were shown where we were to sleep in hammocks. This came with a very amusing introduction and demonstration of how to get into a hammock, which was filmed much to consternation of out mentor. We then squeezed our kit into our lockers and then given some free time to wonder round. We walked around the boats which took along time to do since there are so many boats taking part in the event. We came back in time for dinner, which was followed by some get-to-know-each-other games. We then had some free time to explore the nearby pubs. Our mentor enjoying them slightly too much and not coming onboard till the early hours of the morning. Some found the hammocks slightly uncomfortable but others had a good long sleep. After all our efforts last night, in the end, the sail ripped.. on a seam. As it was already getting dark and the wind decreased again, which left us with only rocking waves, we decided to repair the sail in the morning. So this afternoon we hoisted up the mainsail again as the wind picked up and now we are on the move and rocking and rolling again! Not surprising that we lost our first place today, but we still are 2 in class and 3 over all. Slowly everybody is finding their place on board and in the group. Due to the waves we do have some seasick on board, but they are not giving in! We saw some flying fish today and some birds, but other then that, the water is pretty empty. Today's title should be 'sailhandeling!'. Last night the wind picked up, there where a lot of showers around and waves where building up. At the end of the watch we decided to take away the topsails with two watches. Topsails down and the Tecla was still doing an average of 8 knots close hauled. At 10 am I got woken up to help take the big jib down and the small jib up. During the day watch the wind increased a little more and we decided to reef the mainsail. But after we did that, the wind decreased... until it was totally gone and we where rolling all over the place. So we took the reef out and put the big jib up again. During dinner the wind picked up again and after dinner we took the big jib down again and put the small jib up again, put a reef in the main sail and pulled it all back up again! This time the wind stayed!! Downstairs the crew is organizing a sort of song contest/Tecla's got talent. Early Friday morning I flew out from London Heathrow bound for the Finish city of Turku, one of five host ports for this summer’s Tall Ships Race, managed by Sail Training International (www.sailtraininginternational.org).
Upon arrival I join the Norwegian Tall Ship Christian Radich to compete, hopefully winning, the second race leg for this year’s tall ships race. Joining me are over fifty young people from a variety of different countries, all brought together through an international exchange organised by At SeaSail Training.
Over the course of the race, when ever we have signal posts will be published to this blog giving you updates about life aboard Christian Radich and what activities we have been up to ! Today was my birthday. At midnight I came on watch and they had decorated the whole chart/comm room!! They sang for me, but I could only appreciate it after my second cup of coffee. This morning the next watch sang for me and during the day they backed cakes for me. So all together a very nice birthday at sea!! My watch this morning seemed a birthday gift, strong winds, beautiful sail and a speed up to 11 knots, and just a little (read very much) bit wet with rain. Wind changed from direction and then from strength, to almost non existent.. to bad.. But now in the evening we are on the move again. We are still in the gulfstream with saragosa seeds (sorry if I write this wrong) floating all around us. Second day at sea and finally, after 24 hours, the fog lifted. The sailing today has been great, we got a nice speed going on and the sea is still very flat. We lost our first place in our class to the Jolie Brise today and are now second in class and over all. But we are not in Belfast yet! Today we have seen whales, even in the fog we could hear them and then Nele, who was on lookout at the front, saw one very close by. It came up a few times and then disappeared in the fog. During the night watch the lookout reported all sorts of strange things, like monkeys, and even a penguin... so at first I did not believe her, but then I heard it breathing! We are measuring the temperature of the water to see if we have hit the gulfstream yet, so far the temperature has gone up a little, but it is still around 20 degrees celsius (68F). Thick fog, that is what we are in. We had such a nice view of the Capitan Miranda and the Jolie Brise and now they are gone into the fog. Last night was our first night watch. Clare said that as she wrote in her diary about the night watch, she realized how many different things we had talked about, from stars to tamagoshi's and robots, from politics to relationships through the internet and the cyberworld so far away from this boat right now. And so outside it was no problem staying awake, but inside (during the explanation about the navigational area) one of our new crew members had difficulty keeping her eyes open! And we had still another hour to go! The day started with a lot of rain! Fat drops kept coming out of the sky and the wind died out. Then the wind picked up again, died out again and then came the fog... We can hear the Capitan Miranda on the radio, but further more there is no traffic near us. Lets hope the wind will pick up soon and the fog will disappear. - Crew Tecla, between Halifax - Belfast

New crew is on board. We had a nice dinner out side and everybody is finding his or her way around the ship now. the weather is great! Last night the skies seemed to open up and water just kept on pooring out. There was a party on the Pride of Baltimore which got very cosy as we all had to group together underneath the deckcover. There was some nice music and the rain most certainly did not get our spirits down. Tomorrow morning we will be leaving for Halifax at about 08:30 local time. Our board computer crashed and so we will not be able to use our email on board so that means NO updates for the next few days. Today was pricegiving day. It was in a small park some miles away from where the Tecla is docked, so we got a ride on one of the fast boats. We got splashed pretty badly, but it was fun seeing the fleet from the water and to get refreshed as it has become nice and warm here!!
Some of our old crew have left now and some of the new crew is arriving. Tomorrow is the real boarding day, then we are compleet again with 16 trainees!!

Shop till you dropp in Boston
We are in Boston and yesterday was shopping day, today is shopping day and probably tomorrow as well.. Last night it was Crew party in Cheers, a pub owned by the owner of the cafe which appears in Cheers the series.
We had had Pizza for dinner as we are right smack in the middle of an Italian neighbourhood. And we had pizza when we came back from the crew party and we had pizza for breakfast, by now I have had enough pizza!

We zeiln op dit moment het laatste stuk van de race richting St. Petersburg en hebben net een dikke 8 bf gehad geweldig zeilweer trainees en crew helemaal blij. We missen eigenlijk alleen een lekkere verse Zeeuwse bolus want die hebben ze hier niet jammer genoeg.

We finished!! After a long time without wind, the wind finally picked up and the last 13 miles where crossed within 5 hours. This morning when there was no wind, we had a spectacular sighting of whales! All around us there where whales hunting, jumping, coming up with their heads, flapping their tales and most of all just being very big!! The water was almost totally calm, but there where at least 10 whales around us making waves. At one point one came up to the Tecla and was at a distance of maybe 20 meters, it splashed its tale once and went under. It was such an amazing sight!! Really unforgettable! Now we are in Gloucester harbour. It is very beautiful here! Tonight we celebrate being in harbour and tomorrow we go on to Boston! - Crew Tecla

We hit some light winds and are currently doing 3,5 knots, which is frustrating as we can see land, and almost the point where our finish is, but we are not getting there very fast.. We had a lazy Sunday today. Calm weather and a warm sun for those who wanted to read a book outside or just chatter away. We saw a shark today! And a lot of dolphins. We are in the gulf of Maine and all around us we see yachts who seem to be in a race. It is nice to see so many boats around on a beautiful evening like this, with their colourful foresail's. There is a little fog coming from land, it promises to be another splendid sunset! - Crew Tecla (close to Boston)

We have rounded wp 2 today and are realizing that this race might be coming to an end soon.. On the one hand you hope to be there soon, on the other end, it means no more sailing and saying goodbye to some people who have become dear friends. But lets not think of that yet! Today was cake day! We ate the last bit of the rumcake from Bermuda (thank you chelsea!) and Gijs and Gael made some fresh chocolate and vanilla cake under the instructions of Loes. Besides that we saw some dolphins who did not stay for to long and we are very happy with our new friends the storm Petrel. They are very small seabirds that hang around the boat and dip their feet in water every now and then.. It is not that hot any more, so I don't know why they would do that.. At night (right now..) it is even a bit cold and our thermals have come out of the closet again, I don't mind, during the day it is still very warm in the sun! Crew Tecla

Last night we were preparing for some bad weather, thunderclouds where all around us and we heard from other vessels that they had had a lot of wind. We already had the topsails down and made the deck ready. But no wind came.. we ended up in a calm totally without wind.. strange. So this morning as the breeze picked up again, we set the topsails and low and behold we saw the Urania right next to us. Nele and I did a game of twenty questions during the night, and where I could guess Gaels drumsticks, I could not come up with Frodo from the lord of the Rings. I say I was just very tired and needed coffee! And we both came to the conclusion that we have not had any singing on the aft deck for some time now, maybe tonight is a good night to start again. Smokingggggg!! Last night we set our record of miles per watch! We did 43 miles in the 00 to 04 watch!! Amazing! But everybody in this race seems to be doing very well and going very fast! Just now we tried to set the topsail again after gybing. We knew it would be tough with a lot of wind, so we used jumplines (small ropes around the sail to keep it together when you pull it up and when you pull on the sheet side of the topsail the lines come of and the sail sets itself) but the jumplines came of in a swing with a wave and so we tried to set it without the ropes.. but it was to much, so we took the sail down again. Without topsail we are still very fast and it was a nice exercise! - Crew Tecla

Today we finally caught a fish! Bit we threw it back in the water again. It was a Dolphin fish. And as we are almost in Charleston (;)) and where in the middle of our dinner, we thought it a waste to kill it and not eat it.. It was very big and put up a pretty good fight! Our trainee from Belgium, Gael, hauled her in and with that deserved an applause! During the day the white watch backed an apple pie which was gone within minutes! It said Tecla 1, because that is what we still where today. We keep on meeting wind calms, so we do not know what tomorrow will bring... Crew Tecla

Midsummernight was a succes. We started of with a beautiful sunset at 21:30 BT and after that told our midsummermurder stories. They where creative and fun, and a little scary. There were flying fishes that snatched away cookies that had caused wars, there where love proposals in a dinghy interrupted by a furies person from the Tecla (further names shall not be named, BooBoo) because she needed the dinghy to get to her love and she was assisted by the captain of the MV Butterfly... etc etc! After that we did some broodje aap games and then went to bed. But helaas, not everybody was able to sleep quietly as the mainsail ripped during a period of no wind and crazy waves..
So today was spend repairing the sail and we hope to pull it up later this evening.

We lost our first position to the Pride of Baltimore. It is a very exciting race, with switching places in real positions and on corrected time. So maybe we will be back in the front before long. Today we did a workshop about fire and what procedures to go through at a door and when extinguishing a small fire. Further more we did some games, mastermind was very exciting and after that some sea battles where fought. We saw a coconut drifting today, so the gulf stream can not be far away anymore! - Crew Tecla

Well it is hot again!! We have put up all sorts of wind catchers (thank you for the idea Monique!!!) to get some fresh air in. And as long as this breeze keeps up, we will be doing fine. Last night our jib halliard broke so we had to do without jib for a few hours before it got light and we could bring up a new halliard. This was just as the wind was easing down a little and we thought we had had the worst of the expected strong winds. Today bugs landed on the Tecla, so we know we are getting closer to land. Tonight is midsummersnight! Longest day, shortest night! We are doing a theme night, first midsummersmurder storytelling and after that midsummersgames. It is to hot to sleep anyway!

Its nice out here! It is still warm, but less humid, sleeping is easier for us Europeans now!! The seasick are all better and everybody is getting into the rithme and routine on board. The compass is polished (Jessica and Stefan offered to do so as it looked horrible after the rain of the last few days!), a group of people is doing dishes out on the deck and a group is downstairs doing dishes. The dog has had her first home backed dogbiscuit!

Strong winds prevailed during the night, a lot of showers and shifting winds to go with that. Now the wind is gone again.. we are drifting and rocking as we have done for so many days during the last race. We have just heard the Europa on the VHF saying they have wind, so we are preparing to tack and hoping that the wind will reach us soon as well. We are number one in our class and over all! That was reason for a celebration, so we had banana 'vla' again! But now we are out of vla, so we will have to make banana bread the next time we have to celebrate and get rid of the Banana's.

The start was exciting! We are with so many more ships and we actuallyy had
wind, a lot! Even before we had started we had already changed sails three
times! The waves are uncomfortably short, we have some seasick, but they
take it very well! Some people of the group that brought us to Bermuda are
still on board. As their legs are already shaken in, they are doing very
well. The old crew is being missed, after 29 days you get used to peoples
ways and voices, it is strange to not have them here. But with the new crew
we have new things to talk about, new stories to exchange! New adventures
and places to explore!

Wind has turned against us and increased a little.. Our speed went down and the waves went up! We hope to reach Bermuda somewhere in the night, but are not sure if we are going to enter the harbour in the dark. Today we saw a whale! It was 200 meters away and jumped out of the water twice! This was definitely the best sighting we have had so far. As it came out of the water and landed on the water it made a real big splash and 20 seconds later it jumped again. We also saw two Bermudan Longtail's (birds). Some of the crew felt straight at home at the sight of the bird. They stayed with us for a while, swaying their long tail and gliding through the air like a welcome to Bermuda.

We just hit the 200 miles mark, we are now technically in Bermuda! Or Bermudan waters at least. Spirits are high and we hope to be in Bermuda tomorrow night. Nele our German trainee is getting a lesson in English
(female) literature, she is reading Jane Eyer, and is about to see the movie Emma, after the book emma of Jane Austen. We ate Oma Macaroni, which is a specialty macaroni of my grandmothers and all together we tried to write a Tecla song for the Crew parade about all the different nationalities on board. So today was a very international day. Further more, there is not much news to report. The wind has picked up, but from the wrong direction, so we are sailing almost right into it, but it makes the sun less hot! We saw some birds, some flying fish, a boat and a rain shower past a stern of us. As is daily life on the Tecla.

We came in second.. it must have been very close! Harry came back at 15:15 UTC with the announcement that the results would be a little late. By that time al of us already gathered around the radio, to hear what he had to say, so we where a bit disappointed! Then at 15:45 (or something) he came back with the announcement that the results of the last vessel had just been reported and that the race director would come back to us "shortly"..
Finally at 17:00 UTC the results came back, Jolie Brise one, Tecla two..
arg!!! In the meantime nobody dared to go to the toilet, put on a bathing suit (because we where going to go swimming after the results) or even get a drink, until the results came back! We opened the Lambrousco wine to celebrate and shot the corks as far as we could, just to leave a part of us behind on the spot we had finished (as we had not moved since the finish, due to no wind!). So now the motor is turned on, we just had dinner and tomorrow is another day.. hopefully with some wind so that we don't have to motor all the way to Bermuda!

We are number one again! The rest seems to have no wind, and we at least some..! Today was cleaning day and making up our inventory regarding fresh food and cookies! We cleaned outside and just as we finished spraying the deck we saw some whales/dolphins. We could not really decide on which, it was between a pilot whale and a sort of dolphin, but in the end they both are a sort of large dolphin anyway.. They seemed to have been sunbathing as they lingered at the surface. And we talked to the Bark Europa today! Through the HF we had contact for a while. They where enjoying a steady trade wind and doing a lot of miles per day. They will try and keep in contact with us and race control, but during the coming schedule we could not reach them anymore. It was really cool to all of a sudden hear a Dutch voice and a familiarly name calling us!

Hier gaat het nog steeds geweldig! Met wat lichtere winden zijn de golven ook iets afgenomen, en dat vinden wij helemaal niet erg! Al dat schommelen en zware werk achter het roer is leuk voor een tijdje, maar niet te lang. We hebben nog 550 mijl te gaan naar de finish en gaan ongeveer op ons doel af.
Het weer is mooi, soms wat bewolking maar ook zon, zo'n 18 graden met een koel windje. En wat iedereen nu natuurlijk wil weten is welke positie we hebben in het klassement, nou dat is nog een heel verhaal.. Ze hebben de Kruzenshtern (een heel groot dwarsgetuigd schip met bijna 300 cadetten aan
boord) bij de B klasse in gedaan en nu staat hij eerste in onze klasse en eerste over all.. Wij zijn nu tweede in onze klasse en tweede over all.. Dus eigenlijk zijn we van de B klasse nog eerste! Natuurlijk gaan wij er alles aan doen om onze eerste plaats weer terug te krijgen!!

"we hebben de sokken er goed in" is what we say in dutch, which would translate as "we have got the socks in good".. Or maybe better to say, we are on a roll!! With waves in every direction you look and a wind that has veered from NW to NNE we are currently on a number one position in our class and 2 over all in the race!! Of course it is to early to say anything about the rest of the race, but we did the 'wave' on our aft deck! We altered course this afternoon and are on a postside tack, which seems to agree better with the crew. We have some sick on board, but after a day they are getting better and better. Will let you know more when there is news to tell!

This Morning we had less wind so we where very slowly. The captain�came up with the idea of creating more telltailes. When we got these�strings attached to the ropes we could see exactly where the wind was�coming from. It works really well and we got a little bit faster.
We had a lot of sun today, so we could go sunbathiing at the dek.�It was today Stinas birthday, so we had a little party. After the�party we made some preparations forr the crew parade. At the evening�we had a safety exercise. All people needed to go to the�musterstation and all the people needed to be counted. A good�practice for knowing whatt to do when there would be an alarm.

Ship o`hoi! Greetings from the Dutch Morgenster! A beautiful ship with tiny beds, slippery floors and the best collection of Europeans. When we first�arrived the ship in Stavanger, we were warmly welcomed by the captain and�his crew (and lots of cheap beer!!). It was a really great experience to�sail out of the doc along with lots of other big ships and hundreds of small�private boats, stacked with curious people. Definetly our 15 minutes of�fame!
Today we finally have Egersund behind us, and have our noses pointed towards�Halmstad, Sweden. Some of the other ships have already given up because of�the lack of wind, and turned on their engines last night. Giving up was�never an option for us, we will stay strong and make the crew on board proud�(even though the ETA says we will never reach Halmstad)!
When we are not giving our best on deck, we eat a lot of really good food�(weeeell, lets not mention the out-of-this-world dry bread!), listen to�reggae and teach each other cardgames from the different countries on board.
We are having a lot of fun on Morgenster and are really happy to get to�experience this amazing tall ships race!

Zaterdag waren er vijf mensen op bezoek bij de sultan van Oman. Er was ook een groep die mee zou met een “ rondvaart”.Ik hoorde bij de groep die de rondvaart zou doen.
Maar de rondvaart was toch wat anders dan verwacht! Het werd een berg wandeling van bijna 4 kilometer. Het was best een zware tocht, omdat je ook nog omhoog moest.
Sommige stukken waren heel steil en moest je op rotsen klimmen. Toen we uitendelijk boven aankwamen kon je helaas niet veel zien door de mist, maar het was de moeite wel waard.
In Halmstad komt er ook weer een crewparade, dus daar wordt ook al druk over nagedacht.

Ik heb deze dagen op het schip als positief ervaren: iedereen was aardig en er hangt een gezellige sfeer. Wanneer je weer op land komt is het zo onwerkelijk
wat er allemaal bij komt kijken die feestjes, de mensen, en de andere dingen. Er is zoveel aandacht besteed aan de tallship races. Tot nu toe was alleen de 1ste dag
minder door zeeziek te zijn, maar voor de rest was het super gezellig, En kijk ik nu al weer uit naar de feestjes in Halmstad!

Ik vond de afgelopen dagen aan wal erg leuk. We hebben allemaal verschillende leuke activiteiten gedaan, zoals een feest op ons eigen schip, de crew parade en
de crew party. De eerste avond in Stavanger was er dus een feest op ons eigen schip en ik weet bijna wel zeker dat de meesten op het feestje de Thalassa niet
meer zullen vergeten. De dag erna hadden we de crew parade. Dit vond ik zelf echt super leuk. Gewoon lekker met ze allen een stelletje mongolen na doen
en iedereen die naar je zit te kijken met open mond. Erg lachwekkend, want die mensen zie je 1 keer en daarna nooit meer. De vrijdag avond hadden we de
crew party en vind zelf dat de Noorse mensen nog wel even moeten leren hoe ze een feest moeten geven. Maar gelukkig was de Thalassa crew er dus was het
niet een hele flop geworden. Zaterdag hebben we het met zijn alle lekker rustig aan gedaan en ons voorbereid op de race. Zondag was het dan zover de race
naar Halmstad zou beginnen en er was een enorm grote opkomst mensen die ons wilden uitzwaaien. Dat was wel even een leuk moment dat al die mensen er
stonden om jou (nja de hele crew) uit te zwaaien. Nu zitten we weer midden op de zee en de verveling is alweer toe geslagen. Luister nu ook naar rare boeren
muziek XD. Gewoon, omdat het kan!

Met een overgrote meerderheid aan gekke Friese trainees, begonnen wij in Harlingen aan deze reis. Inmiddels hebben we al heel wat zeiltjes gehesen
en gestreken. Ook brassen, koken en schoonmaken is een fluitje van een cent geworden voor de groep. Na alle feesten en uitstapjes in Stavanger waren
we plots weer op zee, aangevuld door negen Zweden en een Belg. Met groot enthousiasme, wat stuntelig Engels en veel wijzende vingertjes probeerde
iedereen iedereen uit te leggen hoe het er hier aan toe gaat. Zo konden we spannende maar vlekkeloos de start doorstaan: super spectaculair tussen het
startschip en de andere Tall Ships door.

Later ging de wind wat liggen en bleef de Thalassa verder dobberen. Niet erg bevorderlijk voor het race element van deze reis, maar wel lekker rustig
inslingeren. Gisteren zijn we met de “Gotcha!” game gestart, met als gevolg dat geniepige gezichten over het hele schip te vinden zijn. Nathalie sprayde Tjerk
vrolijk dood op het achterdek met window cleaner, terwijl kapitein Lammert achter het crew gordijn werd opgewacht door Niels met een zwemvest...
Niemand is meer te vertrouwen.

Vannacht begon het wat harder te waaien, zodat we onze beenspieren konden verwennen met een cursusje recht lopen op een scheef schip. Dit hebben we
ook alweer zonder al te veel ongelukken overleefd en is het weer dobberen geblazen. In rustige vaartijden wordt druk gewerkt aan de nieuwste ‘Thalassa
Times’ (de interne roddelkrant) met als nieuwe rubriek Zweeds-Friese les. Met de geweldige snelheid van een paar knopen, kruisen we verder naar het
waypoint. Ondertussen proberen we uit te vinden waar onze concurrenten zich bevinden: het is weer tijd om aan de marifoon gekluisterd te luisteren en onze
zelfgemaakte wedstrijdkaart aan te vullen. Moordspellen en raceposities: het is bijzonder spannend op de Thalassa, lieve lezers!

Zuid, zuid oost, zuid zuid west, zuid zuid oost.. 3 knopen, 4 knopen, 6, 7,
8, 3, 5, 7 knopen wind.. en daar gaat de Tecla! We hebben een drukke nacht
en dag achter de rug, overstag, afvallen, oploeven en iedereen in proberen
te halen. We hebben vannacht wel een aantal goede slagen gemaakt, maar in
het klassement zijn wij nog steeds 4 in onze klasse en 13 overall. Er wordt
gepraat over finishen op zee zodat we optijd in de haven kunnen zijn. Dat
zou voor ons niet gunstig zijn, aangezien we weer liggen te drijven.. De
groep werkt hard, maar in stilte hopen we allemaal op meer wind!

Buiten aan het roer staan, wanneer het middenin de nacht is en je het schip met een leuk gangetje naar Stavanger stuurt.

Bovenin de mast zitten als je uitvaart in Stavanger, terwijl er zo’n 70 Tall Ships om je heen liggen en de halve stad is uitgevaren.
Vissen middenop de Noordzee met windstil weer en dan makreeltjes & een poon vangen.
Middenin de nacht tussen booreilanden doorvaren terwijl de maan over het water glinstert.
Om 4 uur ’s nachts all hands on deck, met z’n allen overstag gaan.
Met windstil weer dineren op het dek, waarna we een frisse duik in de Noordzee nemen.
Drie dagen lang geen land zien.
Tenmidden van alle Tall Ships liggen te dobberen op de Noordzee, nou ja het mag natuurlijk ook wel een beetje harder waaien.
Een feestje bouwen met de hele crew, Thalassa is the place to be.
Bij de start op twee meter langs het startschip varen en naast je een schip vol in de achteruit zien gaan omdat het anders niet gaat passen.
De Pulpit Rock beklimmen.
Een radio gesprek volgen tussen de Morgenster uit Nederland die koffie bezorgt op het Poolse schip Pogoria, tsja je moet toch wat doen als er geen wind is.
En tot slot, op mijn favoriete plekje bezig zijn, in het kluivernet staan terwijl de zee onder je doorschiet.

THALASSA LOG / Zo 31 Juli
We gaan de haven bijna weer uit, we hebben hier vier geweldige dagen gehad. Er waren zo’n 4000 jongeren van verschillende schepen in de haven van Stavanger, het was erg leuk om met allemaal nieuwe mensen te praten over het zeilen natuurlijk, maar ook over de landen waar ze vandaan komen, wat ze studeren etc. We werden feestelijk binnengehaald in de haven van Stavanger, een Noor begeleidde ons naar alle activiteiten die georganiseerd werden. Donderdagmiddag was het begin van het weekend, dus veel Noren waren aanwezig in de haven bij de binnenvaart en eenmaal aan wal konden we de stad bekijken, andere schepen bezoeken en de haven bekijken die geheel in teken van dit evenement stond. Vrijdag waren er sportactiviteiten georganiseerd voor de alle bemanningsleden, zoals touwtrekken en kano�n. ’s Avonds hebben wij van de Thalassa een feest georganiseerd op het schip, waar veel bemanning van andere schepen langs kwamen. Zaterdagochtend zijn we vroeg met de ferry het fjord overgestoken, waar bussen klaar stonden om ons naar Preikestolen te vervoeren. We hebben daar met z’n allen een berg beklommen om een schitterend uitzicht te bewonderen, helaas was het mistig. We liepen tussen de bergmeren, watervallen en heel veel rotsen door. Jammer dat bijna de hele haven aan deze activiteit mee wilde doen, daardoor was het erg druk… Toen we terug kwamen waren tien Zweden gearriveerd, die met ons mee zeilen naar Halmstad. We hebben dus voor de komende dagen weer genoeg gespreksstof!�Het grootste spektakel moet nog komen: de uitvaart van alle tall-ships. Ze verwachten tienduizenden mensen die langs de kant ons staan uit te zwaaien. Ze hebben ons de verplichting opgelegd dat we dicht langs de kant moeten varen en met alle zeilen gehesen.�

THALASSA LOG / Do 28 Juli t/m Zo 31 Juli / Drie dagen Stavanger, Noorwegen
Rond 12 uur arriveren we in de haven, die al vol ligt met prachtige Tall Ships. Nadat we het schip schoon hebben gemaakt, gaan we de stad in. Het is een leuk en gezellig stadje dat gebouwd is op een berg. ’s Avonds is er een optreden van een vette Zweedse band. Om 12 uur zijn we terug op de boot, tijd voor een Thalassa party! Nou en die zijn vet ..!
De volgende dag bekijken we de oude stad. ’s Middags hebben we de crew parade. De Russen in hun nette pakjes, en wij, ja wij als Nederlanders, gek dus! In de loop van de avond gaan we naar de crew party, eerst is het een beetje saai, maar uiteindelijk wordt het dan toch super gezellig. En wat blijkt de tent staat vol met Nederlanders, top!

Zaterdag gingen we met een groepje naar de trekpleister van Stavanger, de Pulpit Rock. Eerst met de veerboot, dan met de bus en dan een stukje lopen. Nou ja een stukje lopen... Het is een prachtige omgeving, heel wat anders dan wij zijn gewend. Eenmaal op de Pulpit Rock aangekomen zien we vrij weinig, het was behoorlijk mistig. Een stukje hoger, aan de andere kant van de berg hadden we wel een prachtig uitzicht, we zijn boven de wolken uit gestegen, super gaaf. Wanneer we terug komen op het schip zijn de 9 Zweden en 1 Belg geariveerd, stuk voor stuk leuke lui, vanaf nu hebben een internationaal gezelschap.

De volgende dag varen we uit, tenmidden van allemaal boten, wat een prachtig gezicht. We groeten de burgemeester door het kluiverzeil op en neer te laten gaan. En natuurlijk met de wave, yeah! Het is een behoorlijk eind varen naar de start, ondertussen kunnen we rustig alles voorbereiden. 10 minuten van te voren staan alle zeilen goed, we varen mooi boven de groep richting de de start lijn. Tijdens de start wordt het behoorlijk spannend, we gaan op twee meter langs het wedstrijd schip, terwijl het schip naast ons vol achteruit geeft om een aanvaring te voorkomen. Uiteindelijk komt het allemaal goed en zijn we begonnen aan de wedstrijd. Hey ho let’s go, to Halmstad.

THALASSA LOG / Aankomst Stavanger
Land in zicht! Dat riepen we na drie dagen op zee hebben gevaren waar we alleen booreilanden en grote containerschepen hebben gezien. Na de uitvaart uit Harlingen kwamen we na de Waddeneilanden direct op vrij ruig water terecht. Nadat we hebben geluncht hebben we met een kleine bemanning alle zeilen gehesen, 15 stuks. De rest van de bemanning was zeeziek... Met een beetje uitleg is het goed te begrijpen en nu we een paar keer gehesen en gestreken hebben kunnen we bijna alles als trainees al alleen af. We werken in wachten, vier uur op, acht uur rust. Dat gaat overdag en ’s nachts gewoon door, dus je slaapt steeds in korte intervallen en dan komt het ook nog geregeld voordat er midden in de nacht ‘all hands on deck’ wordt geroepen, zodat iedereen alsnog op moet staan. De wind kan ’s nachts wegvallen zodat we op de motor verder moeten of dat er juist een prachtige wind staat en het zonde is om de motor te laten draaien en dat zijn de momenten waardoor we uit ons nest werden geroepen en gebeld. �Tijdens onze wacht staan als trainees aan het roer, moeten navigeren, logboeken schrijven, zeilen bijzetten en helpen in de keuken. De bemanning geeft alleen instructies.
Woensdagnacht kwamen de lichtjes van de kust van Noorwegen in zicht. De haven van Stavanger lag al vol met tall-ships vanuit de hele wereld. Wij werden al opgewacht door Noorse jongeren die ons gaan begeleiden in Stavanger en omstreken. Wij kunnen als bemanning gratis in alle musea in Stavanger en er worden allerlei tripjes voor ons georganiseerd. Zo kunnen we met een internationaal samengestelde groep een fjordentocht doen, maar we er is ook genoeg gelegenheid om op cultureel gebied Stavanger te verkennen.

THALASSA LOG
De afvaart in Harlingen was een moment waarbij familie en vrienden vanaf de pier ons uitzwaaide. Toen we op het wad voeren ontstond er onder mij en andere trainees een gemoedelijke sfeer. We wilden allemaal wel in de mast klimmen of in het kluivernet om de zeilen uit en in te pakken. We wilden zeilen en werken, maar toen het schip op de motor de zandbank van de Waddenzee had vermeden, kwamen we op de Noordzee. �Daar stonden best hevige golven, zo ging het schip echt op en neer. De bemanning van het schip wilde toch zeilen met windkracht 5 en kwam uit het Noord Oosten. Je wilt van mij vast wel aannemen, dat het buiswater in tegen de patrijspoortjes sloeg aan de lijzijde van het schip. Dat was wel eventjes opkijken: “zo gebeurt dat bij de Thalassa van 282 ton.’’ Ik persoonlijk was door de golfslag en het buiswater wel eventjes zeeziek. �Maar de tabletten als primatour hielden mij er goed boven op.�
Een heel bijzonder moment was de lunch op dinsdag. Het was niet zozeer de nasi, maar de kapitein nam een frisse duik. We hadden namelijk gegeten aan dek en in de zon, terwijl het schip op zee dreef . Dat kon goed. Op de radar was binnen het bereik van 6 mijl geen enkel schip of booreiland zichtbaar, zodoende dreven we zonder zeilen en de motor was uitgezet.
Een frisse duik in de Noordzee was niet zomaar van viermeter hoog het water in springen, maar er slingerde een aantal trainees via een de schoot van de ra in het water. Het was super en het water was opvallend helder ten opzicht van het binnen water in Friesland.�
Verder had ik persoonlijk wel “een strakke actie”. Ik moet om half vijf tijdens mijn waht van van 4 -8 uur het kluivernet in klimmen. Het schoot van de stagvok was geknapt. Het zeil ging naar beneden en moest worden in gepakt. Dat was een karwijtje voor mij tijdens de derde nacht en Stavanger was inzicht. Het schip voer aan de wind en de windkracht was een ruime 3 richting de vier. Ik �moest mezelf in een tuigje hijsen en aan dat tuigje zaten haken waarmee ik mezelf vast maakte aan de verstaging. Het zeilen doeken was een lastig werkje, zo zou ik direct de “schoonheids prijs” krijgen. Niet dus. Ik dacht vast is vast, en zo was het ook.�

De wedstrijd van Stavanger naar Halmstad is een race waarbij louter en alleen mag worden gezeild. Als de wind niet gunstig staat moeten we meerder malen overstag. Alle trainees zullen dan aan deck moet verschijnen. De bel en de kreet: “all hands on deck” zal dan meerder malen worden gebruld.
Nog een leuk gegeven, aanboord praten we als trainees al met elkaar via nautische begrippen, zo is overstag gaan: brassen. Met brassen worden de ra’s omgekeerd. De ra’s zeilen worden bij een overstag als laatste op nieuwe gezet. De ra’s zijn functioneel, zo drukken die het schip om.�

“Good morning! The sun is shining, blue sky, no wind and we’re moving backwards!” To that sentence we woke up. When we stepped out on deck we could see that they were not lying. The weather stayed that way for the rest of the day and the night. Because of the problems with the non-existing wind we couldn’t manoeuvre the ship and at one point we were just drifting in the wrong direction. There was nothing we could do about it.

De wind ging er gisteren helemaal uit en kwam pas deze morgen weer een beetje terug. Iedereen leek weer eens sneller te drijven dan wij.. en zo leek onze goede start te verwateren in een drijf feest naar het zuid zuid oosten. Het waypoint is nog 85 mijl bij ons vandaan en de wind lijkt nog niet veel toe te nemen, tussen de 3 en de 8 knopen is waar we mee aan het spelen zijn.�We hebben wel kleine cakejes gebakken deze middag!�Om ons heen lijken een aantal schepen het ook wat benauwd te krijgen in de race en verschijnen zeilen die buiten de rating staan. Gijs en ik hebben allebei een verkoudheid die ook niet in de rating zit!

We started off from Stavanger harbour around 12.30 AM. Some of the new
volunteers climbed to the top of the mast to enjoy the view, others took
pictures off all the other sailboats and people watching. We where supposed
to start at 18.00 AM, but the entire crew was so excited that they couldn't
wait until the time passed 18.00. In a enormous speed we raced to the start
line before anyone else! That resulted in that we started before we where
allowed to. The hole 1.5 minute we passed before we where supposed to, cost
us an entire 360 turn around as a penalty. After that, the crew was so crazy
to get in for the lost time, so we used an extra sail, a special "stunt
sail" to get more wind and speed. All this made an exciting start at
Morgenster for the new volunteers. After the dinner we got told that our
speed was good and we had a great course.

It is the first night of our last race. There is little wind to fill sails and the tall ship fleet is slowly sailing down the west coast of Norway. Red and green lights at all our sides bob like the colored lanterns of all-hollows eve;the only visible traces of our competitors.
Even with our studding sails set on starboard we only make about 3 knots.
�
Even though the winds were not strong, the beginning of the race was exciting enough. Just before the race began nearly all the class A tall ships (The biggest size class) mustered at one end of the starting line just a few miles from Stavanger. As the race was beginning, the ships began to turn and hoist sail, making for the line.The /Europa/ wasin front, hovering just behind the starting line and we seemed to have waited until the last moment to turn. The cameras on our deck whirred like incessant insects as the entire fleet of class A�€™s headed straight for us. Leading in the front were the two big Russians, /Mir /and /Sedov./ /Mir/ quickly pulled past us, her sail being hauled aloft to the tune of large deck speakers electronically barking orders in Russian to the sailors and cadets./Sedov/ came alongside our port, looming like a horizontally-placed black skyscraper over our comparatively tiny /Europa/. /Sedov /was close enough to us that Captain Klaas would later joke (was it a joke?) that we almost tapped them with our stern as we turned toward the line. With several dozen ships present, there was a forest of masts; enough that it began to be difficult to tell which masts belonged to what ships!

In the jumble, both /Pogoria/ and /Morgenster/ had turned too early toward the starting line, and had crossed it moments before the race had begun! Both ships were forced to do a 360�šturn to penalize them for �€œjumping the gun�€ . I don�€™t know if it was true, but I heard that the race control remarked over the radio that the race had a slow and exciting start! The ships then fanned out for room, making south at a slow pace.

Already we came�€Ã¯Â¿Â½and went, from Stavanger. It was a quick visit, only about 3 days. It was a crowded festival, especially among the ships, who, to fit in Stavanger small harbor, were tied together, sometimes as many as three and four abreast! With so many ships in such a small area, it was only natural that the ships would host many planned and impromptu parties and social gatherings for all the sailors and their friends.
�
Port time is over and we are all back on sea watches. On board, another group of new trainees learn to sail, most for their first time. It is a bit haphazard, maneuvering for a race and teaching, all in the same moment, but apparently that is what tall ship race sail training is about. It is a lot for them to take in, to see so many ships and our own underway what grandeur for a first impression!Perhaps the on-deck reality of pulling, sweating and coiling line brought earthy reality to the romantic image of so many ships sailing in the late afternoon sun.
�
Thankfully, we have a handful of trainees, many who have been on board since Waterford. They have learned enough that they are often leaders of the trainee watches and we on the permanent crew regularly delegate duties and even some sail-handling to them that we otherwise used to do ourselves. They are a huge help in setting good examples for the new trainees, as well as ease them into the nuances of watch schedules, eating times, cleaning times �€“ all the finesse that keeps us fed and the ship orderly. Some have even become our regular who scramble aloft after setting our squares to overhaul the buntlines creasing the sails.

Like the other races, this promises to be a short one, only 270 miles.In just a few short days we will be in Halmstad, Sweden.
�
And for those of you who have been following, we did well in our last race from Lerwick to Stavanger; we placed fifth in our class. More importantly however, we beat the /Pogoria/ in real time (not race-corrected time) /Pogoria/ should be a faster ship than us, but we managed to cross the finish line before her a notable achievement for us and our bark that we hope to replicate for this race.

We zijn van start gegaan met race 3 van de Tall Ships Races 2011! De wind is variabel zowel in kracht als in richting. De race start was goed, maar minder spectaculair als de start van race 2. In de A klasse waren wat schepen te vroeg gestart, de 360 graden draai om dit weer goed te maken hebben zij nu allemaal gemaakt. Onze nieuwe groep is een leuke mix van Nederlanders, Duitsers, Fransen, Engelsen, Noorse en Zweedse trainees. We zijn al druk bezig geweest met zeil handelingen toen wij het fjord uit kruisden. Hierbij kregen wij gezeldschap van de Nortun, een iets kleinere logger die in Noorwegen verblijft. Wij waren zaterdag door hen uitgenodigd voor een lunch en hebben daar een geweldige tijd gehad. We varen nu op een waypoint ten zuid zuid oosten van ons, nog 128 mijl. De wind en de stromingen zullen dit een interessante race maken!

Hier een update van de eendracht, namens de witte wacht Robin, Bas en Anouk. Na een geweldig verblijf in Stavanger, naast onze vrienden van “de stad Amsterdam”, zijn we vanmorgen uitgevaren voor de Parade of Sails. Langs de kant natuurlijk heel veel locals die we hebben toegezongen:

Gevolgd door een hard gejoel en kloppen op de reling.
We zijn nu dus blij dat we per blog iets van ons mogen laten horen want praten is nu moeilijk!
Vandaag zijn we begonnen aan de race. We zijn nu onderweg naar de finish ten noorden van Denemarken. We gaan via een checkpoint en natuurlijk kunnen we niet rechtstreeks (we zijn afhankelijk van de wind). Over afhankelijk zijn gesproken….de wind heeft nog niet vaak van zich laten horen.�
Na het oefenen van de manoeuvres, en een goede start (7e plek!) lekker genoten van de zon. Iedereen is al fan van Rene en Anne, het zijn erg goede koks. Hulde aan de chocolade/kokos mousse.
Voor nu gaan we verder met knopen oefenen; de achtknoop gooien, de mastworp met 1 hand wij kunnen het straks allemaal�

Shortly after the "happy hour", which for us consisted of the joyous task of
toilet duty, our watch came on deck to take over from the previous one. Even
though it all started quite easily, the rising windspeed along with a
turning direction soon gave us enough to do, with lot of opportunity to
hoist additional sails.
At the time we were still sailing in a small group with the Sorlandet and
Eendracht to our starboard and the Alexander von Humboldt to our port. As
hoisting sails is quite some work, we've also gotten people from the other
watches to come out and help us with the rigging.
We stopped hoisting more sails only for supper consisting of rice and fish
(credits for our cook Tim!), after which the red watch took it over from us.
It did not matter much for the amount of people on deck though; everybody
was still eager to help even after their shifts ended.

Earlier on the day we had passed the Sorlandet and the Eendracht. When our
watch started we noticed that they were gaining terrain on us. We trimmed
the sails even better so it could not pass us. The Sorlandet couldn't pass
us, but the Eendracht went faster all of a sudden and sailed past us.
Everyone was running around the ship to help with the sails. It went really
well since everyone knew where all the ropes were and some people from the
other watches also came to help us. We could see that we were going faster
again than some of the ships in sight. The Sorlandet was sailing a small bit
behind us, but on the low side of the wind. Because of this and our course
we managed to push it more to the side, so when we got to the finish the
Sorlandet didn't cross the line, but actually went past it with a few
hundred meters.
We finished at 22:29:41 UTC. We sounded our horn so everyone knew we had
finished the race. A while later the Sorlandet also sounded it's horn, but
we are not sure wether its finish was valid because it hadn't crossed the
five mile line, but went past it.
GULDEN LEEUW LOG / 27-28/07.2011
27th July�
Tonight we finally passed the finish line, ending on a good 11th place. The last few hours before the finish line everyone was on watch, and doing their best to help. We celebrated the end of the race dancing on the deck. The first night in Norway we spent anchored outside the island Bokn, and tonight we had one-hour anchor watches instead of the long watches we usually have. Finally some sleep!
This morning we prepared the ship to sail further into the fjord, pulled up the anchor and set the sails again, this time heading towards Aamoy. We have spent the watches today learning more about knots, so we can win the knot competition, and playing different games. There has not been that much to do today, so we have spent the evening enjoying ourselves with a nice barbecue, more dancing on deck and a trip over to the island Aamoy. Here we went for a little walk, some of us went swimming and others were more interested in the flowers and the nature. When we got back to the ship we had a nice evening together with the rest of the trainees and the crew, but we had to get to bed early so we can get up for our night anchor watches. �
28th July�
Tonight we had one-hour anchor watches again, some of us had late watches and some had earlier, and we all overslept today. After breakfast we turned towards the port and the centre of Stavanger, this time by engine. We have to admit that it was a relief to go by engine for once, we�re getting a little bit tired of pulling the sails. We scrubbed the deck as we approached the harbour, and it did not take long before we were entering the town centre. We have spent the last hours cleaning out of the ship, both on the outside and the inside. The whole harbour in Stavanger is packed with the most beautiful tall ships, and the city is full of festival-feeling. We are going to be Crew Friends for a ship each this weekend, and we have been to the volunteer headquarters to pick up t shirts and jackets and are ready to do our best to ensure that the crew and trainees on our ships get the best experience possible. We are not sure yet what is happening tonight, but we will definitely not miss the opening ceremony in a couple of hours. Hey ho, let�s go!

De bemanning (jij dus) zal bestaan uit ten minste 9 verschillende nationaliteiten en aan boord zal door middel van training en spel niet alleen aandacht zijn voor leren zeilen, maar ook voor internationale vriendschap.

De wind nam afgelopen nacht weer toe en dus hebben wij het grootzeil gereefd en hebben wij de grote kluiver voor de kleine verwisseld. Het was een hoop werk voor een kleine bemanning, maar met een plan en de wil om er een succes van te maken werd dit het ook. We zeilen nu op Terschilling wind is nu meest zuid en kracht 4/5.
Op zee is het duidelijk oktober, koud en nat. Naar huis zeilen is een nieuwe ervaring voor de groep. We zeilen naar het einde van de trip en zij vragen zich af wanneer we in Enkhuizen aan zullen komen. Niets staat vast in het zeilen, maar dat wel, vrijdag middag zijn wij weer terug in Enkhuizen, hopelijk met een mooie tussen stop op Terschelling.

TECLA - 19 october
42 46.86 N 009 03.39 N De barbecue was een succes. Dicht bij een onbewoond eilandje en een strand op het zuiden, werd er eerst gezwommen, door sommigen zelfs de afstand van het schip naar het strand, 300 meter! Daarna het bootje vol geladen met barbecue, eten en drinken. Gelukkig ligt er overal wat sprokkelhout, zodat er een kampvuur gemaakt kan worden, want na de geweldige zonsondergang, wordt het heel erg koud. Na een hamburger, die aan het rooster van de barbecue blijft hangen, krijgen we perfecte gamba’s, sparerib, champignon/groente spies en een tonijn macaroni salade. Aan de worstjes en de maïs zijn we helemaal niet toe gekomen. Dat werd de lunch van de volgende dag. Een kleine tegenvaller was, dat we die dag, Zondag, om 08.00 uur moesten vertrekken en dat er, jammer genoeg geen wind stond. Toen hebben we alle papiertjes met alle namen van elk touw, zeil, knoop etc aan boord, gepakt en per wacht goed geoefend waar- en wat alles is en waar het voor dient. Een dag op de motor is niet leuk, dus zijn we om 22.10 voor anker gegaan in de baai bij Muros. Een vissers dorp/stadje. Liggend aan een heuvel, met nauwe steegjes, gietijzeren balkonnetjes, met varens en mos begroeide trappen. Helaas vinden we hier in de haven weer die stinkende visfarms . Vandaag staat er een zuid westelijke wind, dus we wachten morgen af, dan zal de wind (volgens onze weerplaatjes) noordwest zijn. Dus hebben we met z’n allen de verjaardag van Sophie, nu dus 25 jaar!!!! uitbundig kunnen vieren. Veel ballonnen, een soort hoedje, zelf gemaakt door de groep, van onze oude kluiver, met een wens van een ieder, T-shirt, bloemen en veel kusjes, want in Nederland geven we er drie, maal veertien…….een Spaanse port, een kaasje uit de omgeving, een land wijntje en een heuse Spaanse ham aan been, dun gesneden en dit alles opgeluisterd door vier, als dames verklede, jonge mannen! Morgen is het weer vroeg dag. Dus een groot gedeelte van de groep ligt nu op bed. Ontbijt 08.00 uur, aan dek om 09.00 uur, het bootje aan boord, anker thuis en 10.00 uur,hopelijk met een noordwestelijk windje, op weg naar Vigo. Crew Jeannette - Tecla

43 21.728 N 008 14.671 W Door een het hoge drukgebied boven Engeland, hebben de gebieden aan de rand van dat hoog last van erg veel wind. Dus wij hadden een dag 7 tot 9 beaufort wind. En zelfs onze beschutte baai zag er wit uit. Het anker wacht lopen in de nacht was spannend, bij elke rukwind leek het schip zich te willen verplaatsen. Op de gps kregen we snelheden van 0.6 knopen door, maar onze positie op de elektronische kaart en de peilingen op de haven lichten bleven gelukkig het zelfde. Onze Zwitserse jongeren groep "La Brigantine" heeft naast het zeilen, een eigen leer-werk programma, dus deze dag werd gevuld met evaluaties en nieuwe leer-werk doelstellingen. Aan het eind van de dag nog even met het bootje naar de wal, een hele onderneming in die golfslag, om aan de wal te genieten van zon en strand. Van het thuis front (Jet) horen we dat de Race of the Classics Young Professionals van start is gegaan met een oostelijk windje 2 a 3. Ipswich is het doel en van Loes, die alle logboeken op dit moment op onze site zet, dat de eerste nachtvorst gemeld wordt in Nederland! Op onze weerkaarten zien we de lage drukgebieden al weer aan komen, nu met een veel grotere omvang en ook veel zuidelijker overtrekkend. Wij besluiten om vrijdag dan ook de zeilen te reven, op weg naar La Coruna, om voor de westelijke winden, rond Kaap de Finisterre te zijn. Een prachtige tocht, de kustlijn is hier fantastisch met z’n gouden stranden, rotsen en witte stadjes. We liggen nu in de marina van Fontan, dicht bij Sada, een half uur met de bus naar La Coruna, aan de visserij kade en dat is heerlijk, geen ankerwacht! Voetballen naast het schip, gewoon slapen voor iedereen. Ook worden alle haren geknipt! Bij een enkeling, hoofden zelfs totaal kaal geschoren! Nu moeten we wel richting warmte en zon! Vandaag wordt een dag van boodschappen en schip poetsen, vanmiddag strand en barbecue, zodat we morgen weer op weg kunnen, richting Vigo. Crew Jeannette
TECLA - 14 october
43 39.312 N 08 04.030 W Ria de Cedeira, iets ten oosten van La Coruna, noord Spanje, daar liggen we voor anker. Gister, eind van de middag, zijn we binnen gelopen. Met een toenemende oosten wind en uiteindelijk met een snelheid van 11 knopen in de "buien", kwamen we op de kust afgedonderd. 11 Knopen betekend voor de Tecla: er moet zeil af! En dat werd dus even hard werken, zo vlak voor ons doel. Het weerbericht had het al de hele tijd over een "gale force 8" bij de Kaap van Finisterre, nou die stond er dus ook even, vlak voor we er waren. Het is alsof de wind hier door invloed van land en zee, "funnelt", iets wat ook op de Canaren veel voorkomt, op eens heel veel wind, zonder dat er een echte weersverandering te zien is. De kust is hier stijl, met opvallend veel naaldbos. Er zijn berggeiten en het ziet er vrij onbegaanbaar uit. Als we tussen de rotsen doorvaren, komen we in een zeer beschutte kom, aan de monding van de droge rivier de Cedeira, er ligt een vrij nieuwe strekdam in de haven, die er voor zorgt dat er bijna geen golfslag is. In de haven liggen de typische Spaanse, gekleurde vissersschepen, de meeste zijn trawlers, netten achter het schip, en veel kleine vissersbootjes. Jachten zijn er niet, het toeristen seizoen is hier voorbij. Hier hebben Jan en ik in de zomer van 1981 rond gezworven, van baai naar baai, van terrasje naar terrasje. Er is veel veranderd, de boten zijn groter, van staal, niet meer van hout en minder kleurrijk, de havens zijn groter, op de stranden liggen geen vissersbootjes maar zonaanbidders, langs het strand staan grote gebouwen voor de massa toerist, die we nu gelukkig niet tegen komen. Maar als we even op een terrasje zitten te genieten van de zon, is toch het allermooiste van Spanje nog steeds sterk aanwezig, het leven met elkaar op straat. Geweldig! De krioelende kinderen op een plein, met allemaal moeders (af en toe een vader, we zijn vroeg, 17.00 uur), oma’s en opa’s, iedereen praat of speelt met iedereen, jong en oud, geweldig! TECLA - 12 oktober
46 16.523 N 007 25.412 W De avond is weer gevallen, het is druk om ons heen, allemaal grote vrachtschepen, op weg naar het Kanaal. Gister avond vielen onze zeil lichten uit en moesten we met een gewoon toplicht verder, dat was even heel vervelend, voor de wind en een akelige hobbelige zee, vanwege het continentale plat, (hier komt de Atlantische oceaan aangedenderd met een diepte van meer dan 2000 meter en opeens ligt daar Europa met een diepte van nog geen 100 meter! Dat geeft bijna altijd zeezieken.) met allemaal visserschepen en grote "jongens" om ons heen en geen voorrang kunnen vragen. Vanmorgen bleek, dat de elektra draden, door het gewiebel, los geraakt waren. Een werkje voor Jan, in het zonnetje, gewapend met bril, tang en nieuwe klemmen was het na de middag weer gefikst. Nu kijken we weer trots naar onze rood boven groen en zien we, aan de omliggende schepen, dat ze goed herkenbaar zijn, want iedereen wijkt keurig voor ons. De wind is ondertussen gedraaid naar het oosten, kracht 3 a 4, we zijn de akelige zee kwijt, het is half bewolkt en de dag is vrij rustig verlopen. Tijdens de workshop hebben we gegijpt met nog eens alle uitleg die daar bij hoort. Daarna was het zeil-tassen-naai-tijd, ofwel, iedereen zat in het zonnetje en probeert er iets leuks van te maken. Ook was het de eerste dag, dat de drie jongeren, die altijd bij het eten helpen, hun eerste maaltijd zelf moesten maken. Dat werd dus oma macaroni met sla en warme pudding na. En wees eerlijk, wat je zelf maakt, smaakt ook veel beter! Morgen gaan we voor de eigengemaakte pizza, met een nieuwe chef de cuisine en drie snij/kneed hulpen. Nu is er weer totale rust aan boord, de meerderheid slaapt, er wordt zacht gebabbeld, thee en koffie gedronken. Een ieder die ooit mee gevaren heeft, kent dat gevoel van het begin van de nacht, iedereen kan gerust gaan slapen, er wordt over U gewaakt. Jeannette - Crew

47 54.610 W 005 23.856 W Een week, al weer, verder. Wat hebben we gedaan? We zijn inderdaad naar Dartmouth geweest, met een naar zuidoost draaiend windje. Het blijft een prachtig binnenkomen. Een nauwe invaart met aan alle kanten rotsen en kleine burchtjes. En dan een verbreding met aan weerzijden gekleurde huizen tegen de helling aangeplakt. Omdat het buiten nogal woei en vanuit een totaal verkeerde richting, zuid west 7 a 8, hebben we ons de tijd gegund om hier van al dit moois iets langer te genieten. Dus na een bezoek bij het vvv-kantoor konden we aan de slag. ( Wist je, dat Agatha Christy hier in de omgeving heeft gewoond!) Met de stoom trein een klein rondje Devon, te voet langs de kust, het museum, voetballen in het park, iedereen heeft genoten. Aangezien de weerberichten toch laten zien dat Ierland echt met het slechte weer blijft zitten, nu weer met een rest tropische storm, besluiten we nog een stop in Engeland te maken, Falmouth, om daarna de oversteek te wagen over de Golf van Biscay, richting Spanje en zon! In Falmouth is de gebroken hand nog even door een arts goed bekeken, grote boodschappen aan boord, plus diesel en water, een scheurtje in het kluiver beslag gerepareerd, een laatste avond stappen en internetten en zo waren we allemaal klaar voor de langere oversteek. Dus hebben we Engeland verlaten, onder een prachtige sterren hemel met melkweg en komt ons gedicht weer boven drijven, want dit is toch wel het aller mooist, de wind, het zingen van het schip, alle zeilen op, een knik in de schoot, alle wachten weer paraat, een noordwester wind, beetje motregen (nu), een snelheid variërend van 6 tot 9.8 knopen, we genieten. 49 40.1N 002 40.9 W - Weer onderweg. We hadden even wat oponthoud, maar we varen weer. Op Alderney had een van onze jongeren nl de mooiste foto van z'n leven willen maken maar vergat daarbij, dat hij op een rots stond die 7 meter stijl naar beneden liep. Tja, en toen hij dus die stap naar achter deed, werd hem dat bijna fataal! Resultaat: een gecompliceerde breuk in z'n hand en een jaap in z'n arm. Het eerste is verholpen met een stalen pen, het andere met enkele hechtingen. Omdat er op Alderney op dat momentgeen dokter aanwezig was die dit allemaal kon herstellen, mocht hij vliegen naar Guernsey. Na een verblijf van bijna 2 dagen in het ziekenhuis, is hij weer aan boord, dat hij niet op z'n mondje gevallen was, hebben we geweten, iedereen wilde natuurlijk het verhaal wel 10 maal horen en het mooiste woord, tussen al die rappe zinnen frans was: You where lucky! Dat hadden alle mensen die hem geholpen hebben wel duizend maal gezegd! En vandaag, zondag, poets dag, (toch maar even voor we vertrekken) heeft hij alweer de stofzuiger taak op zich genomen en dat ging prima. Poets-dag is ook verwen dag, dus gezamenlijk een appeltaart gebakken . En toen we toch aan het bakken waren ook maar een focaccia (brood) met kleine tomaatjes. Bij het zien van al dat lekkers en met name de stukken ham die werden gekookt, waren de jongelui niet meer uit de keuken weg te slaan. Toen ik echter vertelde, dat het dierendag was, 4 oktober, en de ham dus voor Nyske was, kwam iedereen wel even vertellen, dat dat wel erg veel was voor een hond en dat dierendag een verzinsel zou zijn, in Frankrijk en Zwitserland kennen ze dat niet. Voor alle niet Nederlandse mensen, die dit lezen, vier dierendag, 4 oktober, verwen je huisdier, of ga eens extra wandelen naar het strand, en vergeet die ham, dat is natuurlijk ongezond voor een hond. En nu zijn we onderweg naar Dartmouth, de stad aan de monding van de rivier de Dart. Het op zeil weg, liep gesmeerd, maar daarna heeft de wind ons weer eens verlaten, met een beetje motor bij vanwege de deining, gaan we de nacht in, op zoek naar de zuid oost 4 a 5........ TECLA - 1 oktober
49 27.07 N 002 31.77 W - Vandaag zijn we inderdaad een eiland verder gegaan, we zijn nu op Guernsey. Voor de wind, noordelijk 3 bft, met een hobbelig zee-tje, gingen we, met een snelheid variërend van 3.6 tot 9 knopen, vol tuig , in een tijd van 4.5 uur, van anker plek naar anker plek. We liggen nu iets ten zuiden van de grote haven van St. Peters Port, Havelet Bay. Ons uitzicht is de stad, kasteel "Cornet", een wit strand en buiten het kommetje, vele eilanden, waaronder: Herm en Sark. Op Guernsey staan fantastische villa’s, kasteeltjes , enorme kerken, keurig aangelegde bloemperken tussen straten, bloemige tierelantijn gietijzeren wacht plaatsen bij de bus, zo te zien een heel rijk eiland. Morgen maar uitzoeken hoe het met deze rijke geschiedenis zit. We hebben nu alleen even wat boodschappen gedaan en het vvv kantoor nog niet gevonden. De mensen zelf zijn zeer gereserveerd, kijken je niet aan en hebben haast. Het einde van een druk toeristen seizoen? Het varen rond de Kanaal eilanden met dit weer, vandaag weer T-shirt temperaturen, is vakantie, de stemming aan boord dus ook! Het zeil zetten en weer weg nemen, gaat steeds vlotter. Een ieder heeft nu wel zijn of haar plekje gevonden, dat maakt het voor anker gaan op zeil gemakkelijk. En voor allen die willen weten of Nyske van boord mag….dat moeten we morgen nog even goed uitzoeken, want het douane gebouw hebben we ook nog niet gevonden. Jeannette - Crew aan boord Tecla
TECLA - 30 september
En het is gelukt, helemaal zeilend, we zijn op Alderney. Het meest noordelijke eiland van de Kanaal Eilanden, 8.36 mijl ofwel 11.61 km ver van het vaste land van Frankrijk. Een eiland waar je binnen zes dagen kunt trouwen, waar ze een echte eigen president en regering hebben, waar je belasting vrije winkels hebt en dat niet tot de EU behoort?!
En toch is het o zo Engels. De tuinen, de huizen, de gebloemde gordijnen. Het is nu een rustig eiland. De meeste veerboten varen niet meer, dus je kunt er nu alleen nog maar per vliegtuigje naar toe, van af een van de grotere eilanden. Of je neemt net als wij, je eigen boot en vaart er, met een gemiddelde snelheid van 6 knopen, stroompje mee, binnen 14 uur, tijdens een onbewolkte, maar met sterren- en maan nacht rustig, vanaf Yarmouth naar toe. Vannacht om 03.30 lagen we voor anker en na een biertje, als je geen anker wacht had, in bed. Vanochtend waren we dus allemaal iets later met het ontbijt, om daarna het eiland te verkennen. We hebben het wel getroffen met het weer! Weer droog , zonnig en geen wind. Dus werd er na het ontbijt nog wel even gezwommen door de jongeren. En natuurlijk perfect voor de bemanning om toch nog even een paar uurtjes te klussen, de voorstag in het vet, de machine kamer opruimen, touwen bekleden en de eeuwig durende was natuurlijk, dus de Tecla was weer een grote waslijn. Alleen Nyske - de scheepshond -was zeer ontevreden. Hier moeten honden en katten aan boord, op- en eigenlijk zelfs, binnen blijven. Dat laatste hebben we natuurlijk niet gedaan, het was al erg genoeg, dat het bijbootje, met de nu perfect lopende nieuwe motor, zomaar zonder haar vertrok. Morgen gaan we op weg naar Geurnsey (een kleine 20 mijl ofwel 36.5 km), en als we het goed gelezen hebben, mag ze daar wel van boord! Crew Jeannette
TECLA - 29 september
De zondag bracht veel zon, geen wind een dagje genieten van Isle of Wight. Het enige echte spannende was, dat de buitenboord motor het echt niet wilde doen en er dus geroeid moest gaan worden. Gelukkig zijn er vier roeispanen aan boord ! Maandag was dus de dag om opzoek te gaan naar een bougie. Daarom liggen we nu in de haven van Yarmouth. Een dorpje nog net aan het Solent, waar veerboten af en aan gaan van en naar Southhampton/Lymington./Porthmouth. Een echt vakantie dorp, met de iets oudere wandel/bad-gast. Iedereen kent iedereen, dus je bent hier meteen een bekend figuur, de havenmeester vroeg ook direct waar we vandaan kwamen, zo laat in het seizoen, andere jaren waren we toch veel vroeger! Het is elke keer weer fijn een beetje thuis te komen. De maandag werd verder gevuld met water tanken, harpen van de piek vervangen, boodschappen doen, crossen met de winkelkar, de grote was in de wasserette, op zoek naar de bougie en wachten op een monteur die er in "a minute "zou zijn! Nee dus. Vanmorgen zijn Jan en Gijs dan ook vroeg onderweg gegaan naar Cowes, omdat daar een echte dealer van buitenboord motoren zit, die ons of helpt aan een bougie, of aan een andere motor, omdat deze toch wel heel veel kuren krijgt en wij op de kanaal eilanden, waar we vanmiddag naar onderweg gaan, elke dag voor anker liggen met een behoorlijke stroming, waar slecht tegen in te roeien valt. Op het moment is er weer amper wind, maar toch hopen we op een noordwestelijke 4 a 5 bft die er aan komt, volgens de deskundigen. 50 44. 39 N 01 11.65 W. We zijn er! Het is niet iets om erg trots op te zijn, maar we liggen wel voor anker aan de noord kant van Isle of Wight. Gister begon de dag heel mooi en veel belovend. Een schitterende zonsopgang, om 08.00 uur alle zeilen omhoog, topzeilen incluis, anker op, een noordelijk windje, kracht 3 bft en zo begonnen we de dag met een snelheid van 4,7 knopen. Na een ontbijt met pannekoeken en een weerbericht dat het over wind 3 a 4 had, uit noordelijke richtingen, leek het een zonnige zeildag te gaan worden. Vlak langs de witte krijt kust, was het dan ook volop genieten. Iedereen was aan het pummelen, een beetje vissen, de trapjes in het wand voorzien van nieuwe bindsels, broodbakken, zonnen, alleen Jan had het iets minder fraai, hij zat in de machine kamer de laatste nieuwe pomp, die maar niet wilde aanzuigen, zuigend te krijgen (en dat is gelukt) Onze workshop was: een begin maken van het naaien van een zeil tas. Hier voor gebruiken we, onze ooit zo geliefde, grote kluiver. Aangezien het zeil totaal aan alle kanten uitgescheurd was tijdens onze laatste reis, begint het nu een nieuw leven als onder anderen zeiltas. En iedereen is er dan ook vol goede moed aan begonnen, eerst uittekenen, knippen en dan naaien, om er later een persoonlijk tintje aan te gaan geven. Onze franse deckhand/tolk Sophie, die we ontmoet hebben tijdens de TSAC race, waar ze mee voer op de franse topzeil schoener, Etoile, is al bijna klaar, bij anderen zal dat nog wel even duren. Maar ja, de wind! Na de kompas roos gerond te hebben, verdween die in het niets, dus hebben we toch maar besloten de motor te starten en door te varen naar Wight. En na weer een geweldige zonsondergang en rose maan opgang, veel noord, zuid, groene en rode tonnen hebben we anker laten vallen bij Ryde. En vanmorgen konden we genieten van weer een heerlijk zonnetje en een prachtig uitzicht, echte kasteeltjes en veel groen. Ik ben benieuwd wat deze zondag zal brengen.

TECLA - 25 September
50 54.78 N 00 46.30 Het klopt! Voor alle mensen die kijken waar we liggen, kan ik alleen maar zeggen, het klopt, we zij alleen maar overgestoken naar de andere kant van het kanaal. Om precies te zijn liggen we bij Rye. Een historische plek, wat betreft boten bouw en visserij. Als je nl. Rey in wilt varen moet je over een droogte (dat betekend dat je er alleen met hoog water in kunt) en val je in de haven bij laag water "droog". Hier werden vroeger in de modder houten vissersschepen gebouwd die veel lijken op onze loggers, zoals de Tecla. Wij liggen nu weer voor anker te wachten op de juiste stroom en het liefst ook nog de juiste wind, of gewoon: wind! Toch was het geen verloren dag. Na het ontbijt en anker op, hebben we met z'n allen het schip van binnen en buiten gepoetst. Niet iedereen is altijd even enthousiast bij dit gebeuren, maar om er toch iets leuks van te maken hebben we vers brood en cake gebakken en dat rook geweldig! Tijdens de warme chocolade met spekulaas hebben we dan ook maar besloten er een echte vakantie dag van te maken, zwemmen! Volgens Shahran was de water temperatuur nog 18 graden, dus waarom niet. Ik denk zelf, dat de thermometer te lang in de zon heeft gelegen en te kort in de emmer met water, maar dat mocht de pret niet drukken. Na een ijsje en onze overheerlijke zelfgebakken cake heeft iedereen genoten van deze late, heerlijk warme, zomerdag. Jeannette - Crew Tecla.

50 54.75 N 01 39.99 E - We liggen voor anker bij Cape Petit Blanc Nez. Het stukje Europa waar je Engeland bijna aan kan raken. En waar je ziet dat een stukje Frankrijk ook een soort witte krijt rotsen heeft. Het stukje waar allemaal veerboten heen en weer gaan, waar je elke keer weer denkt, hoeveel mensen gaan er dagelijks over dit o zo druk bevaren stuk water? Daar liggen we, aan de ene kant Frankrijk en aan de andere kant dus Engeland. De wind was weg en de stroom dreef ons alle kanten op en hier is dat dan toch even een probleem. De grote vrachtschepen, komend vanaf alle kanten gaan door deze vernauwing op eens allemaal het kanaal in, een grote snelweg, waar het marifoon verkeer niet stopt, waar elk schip zich moet melden en vertellen met hoeveel lading, aantal personen, bestemming en conditie van het schip ze onderweg zijn om permissie te krijgen door te varen. En dan moet je vaak aan vroeger denken, hoe deden ze dat toen, al zeilend, zonder marifoon, alleen vlaggen om te seinen. Daarom wachten wij morgen maar even af om over te steken, zodat iedereen goed kan zien wat we aan het doen zijn. We hopen op wat meer wind, alhoewel het weerbericht dat niet bevestigt. Vandaag hebben we drie landen in 24 uur gedaan we hadden een fantastische zonsondergang, de beginnende maan mochten we ook bewonderen, onze dag kan niet meer stuk. Crew Jeannette aan boord Tecla.

Alle zeilen staan er goed bij, de sfeer aan boord is goed, maar de snelheid is niet geweldig. Door een stationair hoogdruk gebied boven Frankrijk, hebben wij te maken met weinig wind. Het draait een beetje tussen zuid west en noord west. Onze snelheid op dit moment is 1.7 knopen en is vandaag maar heel even 5 knopen geweest. Qua zeilen zou het dus iets beter kunnen. De aandacht ligt nu hoofdzakelijk bij het wacht lopen, slapen, eten en afwassen. Gelukkig is de zee een stuk kalmer geworden en heeft bijna iedereen gegeten. Vanmiddag was de eerste work-shop, de pin rail van de bezaan. Waar zitten de touwen, hoe heten ze, hoe ze beleggen en waar dienen ze voor. De franse, nederlandse en engelse benamingen vliegen in het rond, maar we snappen uiteindelijk allemaal waar wat zit en waarom. Ons taal probleem wordt steeds kleiner, iedereen doet z'n best de ander te verstaan, soms is een woord nog wel even verwarrend, zei hij nou: mer of vert, zee of glas, maar daar kom je later wel weer achter, dat de limonade echt niet de zee in gaat We liggen wat tussen geankerde schepen door te varen, de sterren komen voorzichtig te voorschijn, we gaan weer een maanloze nacht tegemoet. - Jeannette - Crew Tecla
TECLA - 21 September
Na enkele moeilijkheden met de internet verbindingen zijn wij er weer! Deze reis zal Jet thuis zijn dus zal ik, Jannette, proberen iedereen op de hoogte te houden. Na een rondje Nederland, IJsselmeer en Wad (toch mooi, al die prielen en zee honden) zijn we gistermiddag de Noordzee op gevaren, tussen Texel en Den Helder. Door de korte golven op de Noordzee hebben we vrij veel zeezieken. Maar omdat de groep nu al een week aan boord is, is het avontuur nu ook echt begonnen en hoort het ziek zijn er gewoon bij. We zijn opweg naar Wight, maar met deze wind kan dat nog wel even duren. Op het moment hebben we windkracht 2 uit de noord west, droog en niet echt koud. We varen nog steeds naast Noord Holland, maar daar zal hopelijk vandaag verandering in komen. Jeanette - Crew Tecla

After a short stop in Portsmouth, we are now on our way for the last track towards Oostende, Belgium. In Portsmouth we met up with a Race friend of ours, Harry. We where moored alongside a very green light ship (although they are red when still in use) and he came to say hello. We also met up with one of the winners of the Baltic race, the couple that sails the Pegasus. We went to see their boat and got the grand tour. It is a very beautiful pilot cutter built for sail training.
In the morning we set out again, but there is no wind, so we are on motor. The weather has been very fine the last two days, so we just enjoyed the view of the English coast and the warm sunshine.

We left our anchorage under sail. With mainsail, forestaysail and jib up, we first backed, then turned and then got the speed up. The water was totally calm, but the breeze was nice, so we soon got up to 6,5 knots. In the harbor entrance we met some crew members from the Funchal 500 race last year, they where on their yacht the 'stardust' and came to say hello. As we set out for Portsmouth, they set out for Plymouth. The day has been changeful, we have had rain, wind has been between south and north west, the sun is out now and the sunset promises to be very beautiful! Compared to the Atlantic Ocean, the water is so busy with traffic! Now we get the chance to explain the lights to Nele, Gael and the group, where we only met a few vessels on our big journey..

At noon we had to muster on deck for the red watch. We had to do watch duties like look-out, bouy watch, fire watch or helmsman or just stand bye to help the permanent crew. I had to be look-out from 2 till 3 pm but nothing happened here on the North Sea so we had a quiet watch. After this we laid down on deck because it was nice weather. The wind is from the South 4 BFT and the sun is shining. All sails up! After my watch we weared the ship to a starboard tack.

I am assigned in the blue watch from 8 to 12. I think it is the most relaxed watch there is. You can see the sunrise and sunset. And this morning we did set almost all of the sails. Together with other people from the blue watch I went up into the rig to unsecure the sails. After we came down the rig, other people from my watch set the sails by pulling the halyards and the sheets.
At 12 o'clock we were relieved by the red watch, so I had some time by myself. First I went to have lunch and after that I went to the forecastle to enjoy the nice weather and to look at the ship and way she moves through the water. After diner I had to muster again at the maindeck for the 8 to
12 watch. During our watch we had to take in all of the squaresails. When they were all clewed up we had to go into the rig again to secure the sails.
We tried to get the work done before sunset but we did not manage. The last sails were secured in the dark and we were finished just at the end of our watch. It was quite exciting to do this job.
This journey will last for more than 2 days. I have a great time on board and I enjoy this experience. Fair winds to all!!

SETTING SAIL
On Sunday the first part of the group trainees arrived in Bergen. After arrival of the last trainees on Monday we cast off to sea at 6 pm. In the evening we sailed through the fjords. All watches have been instructed during the evening and from 10 pm the sea watches started. During the night we left the fjords and went to sea north of Haugesund.
Now we are setting sail. The staysails were set quickly. The trainees of the blue watch go up the masts en prepare the topsails. They will be set soon. We have nice weather. Wind is good NW 4 BFT. Everyone starts to get used to movement of the sea. A lovely day to come.

Today we all wake up early to get the anchor up and go in to the Kielerchanel. The pilots are coming on board and we need to go to the lock. It takes about 7-8 hours to go through.
After happy hours we have assistant climbed for people who need extra help with climbing and also the people in a wheelchair had to go up to the first platform. Micheal (DE) is smiling when he is above and wants to stay all day. Sam (IR) really enjoys it as well and this is the first time he is so high above ‘sea level’ (except from being in a plane) Around 10 people are helping to hoist him up in the mast and afterwards everybody tells they enjoyed it really much.
Today it is German day so a good day. Nice bread with cheese and ham, for lunch potatoes-soup and meat, for dinner potatoes, meat and purple vegetables. For dessert: wow, apfelstrudel! The cook (Gerry) really did his best today and made very good stuff. They also gave a German course (gutenmorgen – good morning / es war mir ein vergnugen – it is me a pleasure) Lukasz gave a presentation about the city he lives (Olm, close to Munchen) and Johannes told some more about Rostock and the places he likes in his city/industries/shipbuilding etc.
The murder game already started today. Somebody can be killed if you get 3 things together. (Name/murder weapon/place) Janine was killed with a teddy bear to the mainmast and she was the first one, just one minute after the game started.

All the other big Tall Ships who were besides us left yesterday evening so we are alone now in the harbour. In the morning we were really busy with all drills on board and evacuation in emergencies. Ali(2nd mate) tells us about the emergency evacuation routes & muster stations. Afterwards the bell rings and we have to find the musterstation and get a lifejacket. Afterwards we have to climb up the rigg,
Eavan (Ireland) tells us she is not the biggest fan to go aloft but she made it!
It is Toms (NL) birthday today. So the cook made a cake and we sang in 3 different languages.

Now we have arrived in the port of Warnemunde, Rostock. After looking forward to the voyage for weeks we are now about to start. In the evening we got introduced to our watch and our watchleader and where among many other things told about safety on board and we are starting to learn about sailing and those practical things which have to be done. It is a challenge to be around this many people and nationalities.

The race is finished! All ships are over the finish line. And just now we heard that we are 1 in our class AND over all!! We got a phone call from Holland congratulating us! The last day and a half we have been at anchor and later along a quay in Sheep Haven, near a town called Downings. Gijs and I went to get some groceries, but had to hitchhike to the next town to get the supplies we needed. I stayed behind with the dog and Gijs and Clair asked somebody for a lift. This was easily arranged! We got our stuff and they even drove us back! It was a lovely day, some of the group hiked up a mountain and the rest strolled along the beautiful beach. At night we got some visitors, relatives of Clair, and had a nice party first on board and later in the local pub! Now we are under full sail again and on our way to Ballycastle. Hope the light winds will take us there.

Land ho! And 40 miles to go! Our Irish crew jumped up and down on the foredeck as we saw the first strip of land. The midday pancakes where flying through the air and all seasickness, rain and the howling wind from a few days ago where forgotten. Now the Irish music is playing on the radio (I think other cd's are not allowed anymore..) and outside (when it doesn't rain or drizzle) Irish songs can be heard guided by someone on the guitar. We are not sure yet as to what we will do after the finish, but ham sandwiches and beers are waiting for us in one of the bays near Tory Island, where the finish is. Sarah is trying to get us all t shirts after own design with the Tecla and the race on it, as soon as we have pictures, we will post/send them! Ireland here we come!

SUN!! And cleaning day! Due to the waves we had to skip a few cleaning days, but now with all the hatches open we could throw all the dirty, wet stuff out and clean the boat, bottom to top! A cd filled with love songs was playing loudly, the hallway was filled with singing Irish girls with mops, bin bags, cleaning products and the vacuum cleaner as microphone! We are still sailing down wind, now with the forestay sail on the windward side, rocking a little to much by the waves that are left off the last few days. That did not stop the yoga class from taking place though! And it certainly does not stop the dolphins from coming alongside and giving a show almost 4 times per day! Winds have decreased and with them the waves. So we set the mainsail with two reefs in it this morning and took the reefs out this afternoon and changed the small jib, for the big jib. The weather is still cold, grey, drizzling, but the spirits on board are good. Singing during the day watch and discussions during the night. As we set the big jib today, we where accompanied by some dolphins playing in the waves. They had some small ones with them that jumped out of the water with every breaking wave and sometimes seemed to look at us smiling. When the dishes are done we might set the topsail to keep up the speed if the wind decreases even more. - Crew Tecla, between Halifax - Belfast

Home sweet home - 30-31 of July
Last 24 hours all ship crew and trainees all the night were on their feet. It was because of that, that there were left not very much till the end of the race, but wind was not very good for us and every minute we had to be prepared for tacking and very fast come to battle station.
And in the middle of the day we have had tacked twice and in the afternoon of 30 of July we have crossed the finish line of the race. That evening the sunset was incredible. The rain was coming and we saw sun between horizon of the sea and rain clouds. It was amazing!!!!
Everybody in the ship just stopped and they were enjoying of the sunset... After that has come the final results – Christian Radich in the class A – FIRST!!!!!!
After that Captain gave order to pull up the sails and last hours till we reach my hometown Klaipeda was started. In the last our watch (00.00-04.00) we were so busy that I haven't felt when all preparation jobs where finished – all night we where preparing ship for hers staying in harbor. In that watch we had nice surprise – Grete and Vivi has made pancakes in Norwegian.By the way – this night was the first night when I had possibility to feel what does it means to be in the sea when the rain has come...
After interesting day and short watch we all went to sleep. An I awoke then, when I had possibility to say -”Welcome to Lithuania!” :)

We really are going towards Ireland and the weather wanted to be the first to tell us! Yesterday the barometer started dropping like in a free fall and within a few hours the winds increased up to 7bf. We had already reeved the mizzen and as we put in the reef of the main, we decided not to set it at all. Today nothing much changed. Winds are strong and waves have build up. The Tecla danced up and down the waves. During our day watch we read each other fairy tails from Ireland and ghost stories from Scotland. Although out at sea the thought of a haunted house is not as scary as when at land. - Crew Tecla

12,4! 12,4 knots!!! Surfing down the waves, James hanging on to the wheel and the whole watch clinging on to their seats when we hit the 12,4 knots last night. Crazy weather and enough wind to take the topsails down and still do a comfortable 9 to 10 knots and not throw people out of their bunks! Someone said 'this is what I expected with an Atlantic crossing, waves all around and strong winds'. Well the waves have decreased and the wind is down to 4 to 5 beaufort and this still feels like an atlantic crossing. We passed the halfway mark and are now making nice progress towards Ireland, still a little over 1000 miles to go. After an eventful night the ship was totally silent during the day. As we have everybody on standby for taking down the topsails and reeving, so they get their sleep while they can, now for the first time this trip, there was nobody out on deck but the watch that was on. That did not stop us from getting into all sorts of discussions and eating a whole lot of gummy bears!

Last night was a windless but certainly not boring night! The waves kept rocking us as we talked about what used to scare us and what still does, about banshee's in Ireland and de kinderverslinder in Holland, we talked about the shifting solar systems and stars, (why learn them if they are going to be different in 1000 years..?) and kids names (after 20 minutes somebody asked whether this was something someone thought about in advance..). During the day we saw a lot of dolphins! They where common dolphins, but there was nothing common about their playful swimming and jumping around! They stayed for some time and gave everybody a good chance for pictures. And today was also cleaning day, the ship smells nice and clean again. And as the weather is very good, all the doors and hatches are open to let the fresh air in.
A small flu is on board and it has already made a lot of victims, me included. It comes suddenly and passes quick, but the last two days I was not up for writing the blog, hopefully the flu ended with me, no new victims so far..

Radich Watch Up date: 8-12 Watch 30th July between Turku- Klaipeda
This morning we awoke with nervous anticipation of what was going to happen on our watch. The previous night we learnt that we were still first in our class, and that the finish time for the race had been brought forward due to the adverse winds. As it turned out we had very little time to wait as we were waiting the tall ship behind us to tack. When she did this we tacked to cover her. And so began the endless trimming of the sails and halyards to make sure that the boat was travelling at the fastest speed possible. Once this was finally over we just had to sit and wait for the end of the race and for the commands from the captain.
This was a long wait with very little activity as the wind did not vary very much. So little trimming of the large square sails that power the tall ship along through the water was required. At 1600 the captain gathered us on the main deck an told us that we would have to wait and see what the results of the race were.

8-12 watch update 29th July Christian Radich - Turku - Klaipeda
We just wanted to share with you the best memories from the sunset yesterday, we climbed up to the top of the main mast where we stayed for approximately 45 minutes. The view was more than marvellous the open shimmering sea quite with no other ships on the horizon and the key to this view was the other ships on the horizon. We were watching it from the start to the finish with people sitting on the yards talking taking thousands of pictures or just in silence enjoying the end of the day from the birds view.
In the evening before the sunset we did even common titanic which means some friends at once were standing on the bowsprit.
Amazing moments that connect people. During the night we were supposed to tack, so everyone was expected to be awake and ready to do their duty with the ropes but fortunately nothing like that happened. We managed to sail within the whole night and then after quick breakfast we did the fastest tacking the captain had ever seen. Then the second after 3 min and all the tall ships were behind us. We are first now passing the light house at the end of Gotland. Lying on the foredeck practicing the winners song just in case of the event, the warms us, even if we are in half dreamy dead, because of the murderer’s game which started an hour ago. Let’s see who wins!

Last night when the race results came in the Captain told us that we are still first in our class which is good to hear, we celebrated with applause and then went onto our night watches. News also followed that due to the winds and the fact that many of the ships had not yet passed GOTLAND the race would finish early so that we could grantee all of the ships were able to be in port for the events in Klaipeda
Sailing during the night was good and we had easy watches, allowing for fun and games. One game that was played was the bear game. In this game to people pretend to be PARENTS and give birth to a baby bear. However the parents have to try and stop the baby from being born, whilst the baby has to try to be born. In reality a person has to push through two people who are lying on top of each other and trying to stop the person pushing through the two of them.

One would think 10 days into sailing the North Atlantic, that we would all have our personal baseballs and be firing them at some random wall a la 'Cooler King' in The Great Escape. Not so. There are moments when one needs time out - shower, sleep, bare necessities - or maybe an hour to read and catch up on one's journal. But days seem to be filled with sail, sustenance and ship management.
The elements are our master. At 8am this morning the wind picked up suddenly which meant all hands on deck to reef the main and mizzen sails - even those who had just come off watch. Sail adjustment continued throughout the day and we just finished a short time ago putting up the main and mizzen top sails with the most beautiful sunset as a backdrop and the moon rising over the water.
The simple things are definitely to the fore - whales, dolphins, jelly fish and even the glowing algae which ignites the water at night are a daily occurrence though no less exciting or intriguing for their frequency. Delicious curries and salads courtesy of our talented chef Jet (Tecla recipe book to follow - hopefully!). Jannette's freshly baked cinnamon and raisin bread (yum yum). 'Boga' (aka boat yoga)to stretch out aching limbs. But who could forget the 'craic' - the fun and laughter on board as the crew really starts to work together and communicate with each other.
Something alchemical is happening on this beautiful ship, and although thoughts of family and friends drift towards home we still have half an ocean to cross and the excitement of the competition!

We are all getting to know our way around the ropes even at night now. The topsails went up again at day break as we oomed along at 9 knots. Neiske the dog was taken below last night, she normally is tucked behind the helm in all weathers, but last night was a treat to keep her warm. We miss her when she is not in her normal place so it's good when day breaks and up she comes. A busy ship as always, including sewing some sails, whippings, and loads of songs from the seven Irish Ship mates. The Irish can sign and play the guitar, and joke and laugh a lot. Can't imagine what it will be like to sail into their home town with them all.... Settling down for the night now, checking all the trim, will the top sails have to come down? Will the wind shift NW as predicted and we will have to tack. I think I will keep my sea boots on for a while when I go down below after my watch. Another day on Tecla and we are number one again today in our class. We hear daily about the fleet who are racing with us, but we can't see them.

From Tuesday 28th July - news from the 4 - 8 Watch, Tacking, Napping and learning
We wake up at 0330 and started our watch at 0400, we saw a beautiful sunrise whilst members of the watch stood look out I had safety watch (which involves checking the ship for fires and making sure that all is well below decks). Some people from our watch made presentations about their countries, so we learnt something about Italy, Finland, Lithuania and France. After that we took a nap, then the Bosun told everyone that we we’re taking and should take our stations. Following the tack the Captain said that it went very well and that we should be happy with our current placing in the race.

Today Nele is 100 days on board of the Tecla! A small celebration and a special desert, rice pudding. She says she still remembers the start of her journey as if it where yesterday. As she was reading trough her diary she kept during this trip, she laughed about a gap during the Biscay crossing where she was sick and could not bring herself to write anything; and she misses those who have traveled with her and have become her friends. She does not yet want to think about leaving, lets leave that until we get to Belfast.
Last night we had some petrels on board. During a tack we turned on the deck lights and they came flying at it! Luckily they where fine and gone as soon as the light where turned of. During the day we did our first real workshop. We started of with the history of the Tecla and the fishing loggers of Holland and ended with a walk around the ships pointing out the ropes and sails and use of them all. It was a pleasant day. 28 Jul - 8 to 12 Watch - Day three - A night of racing, tacking and continued learning
Today we woke up at 0700 in time for breakfast. The watch started at 0800 where our first task was to tighten some of the sails. As we were so fast at this task we started to learn some of the important knots that are required for the ship.
This turned into a bit of fooling around when Chris, our mentor tied our hands together with ropes linked together like two parts of a chain. We had to try and escape from this, which led to many interesting attempts that failed.
That took even the “smartest” of us at least half an hour before we were begging for help. There was some more problem solving before we had lunch. The captain let us know that we were in first place in our class in the race, yeah!

The nightwatch was filled with scary stories. During the day we had discussed fortunetellers and some of the stories gave us chills down our spines, but at night we talked about pirates. Real pirates, that live now a days. The setting was perfect, it was misty, cold and the wind kept changing in direction and force. And then all of a sudden we heard a fog horn. The vessel had already come up on the radar, but hearing it gave us the creeps! It came closer and closer and seemed to come straight at us. But then at three miles it changed course and went behind us. At two and a half miles we saw their lights and silent as a big whale, they set of in a different direction. Tonight we might try and read some ghost stories to kill the time, until the wind returns. - Crew Tecla between Halifax and Belfast

Monday, 27 July 2009 4 to 8 - The 4-8 watch woke up about 3.30 a.m. to get ready for our first morning watch. Everyone was sleepy and only half wake. We changed over on the main deck with the 12-4 watch, had some food from the mess. The look out went to the front of the shop for one hour before they changed. The safety watch walks around the ship twice every hour checking for any possible fire. The safety watch then changes every hour. We proceeded by climbing the mast and unpacking the main sail and afterwards we repacked it for practice. We also learnt how to set the sails and the names of some of the endless amounts of ropes. We were taught what ‘tacking’ was and how to do it as at first it seems to be quite complicated but it turns out to be rather easy. I was even allowed to steer the ship which was an amazing experience, I had to follow a course of 090 degrees which is much harder than it sounds. Finally we changed watch with the 8-12 watch on the main deck and afterwards we had a delicious breakfast. Following breakfast some people tried to get some sleep or discussed with others the different cultures they come from and the music they enjoy. At 10.30 a.m. we had a talk with the captain where everyone should be positioned when the race begins. When the race started we let down the sails and pulled on many heavy ropes. We passes the start line quite fast and now we have a good position in the race. At the moment we are surrounded de dozens of other tall ships which gives us an amazing view, plus we are always comparing our position and speed with the other ships. At the moment we are also sailing upwind which means we will be constantly beating against the wind which will require a lot of work as the boat will be frequently tacking/turning which means we have to brace/turn the yards and re-trim the sails. Luckily the weather is still very good and quite sunny. Lets hope all continues for the rest of the race!!

27th June - An update from the 12 - 4 Watch - The Race has started
The race has started!
Yesterday we left Turku and sailed out to sea. I was starting to feel afraid about sea sickness, but what can I say now...I feel not very bad, but not very good at all!
Today in the morning 3.00-4.00 I was doing look-out. It was amazing!!!!! I had a possibility to see, how the sun was raising up and the new day was coming.
After a few hours of sleep, we all were woken up, because we had to cross the starting line. A lot of tall ships were around us and in the short breaks after doing some trainee jobs we had the possibility to enjoy the beautiful (again :) ) view around us.
In our watch time we had our instructor briefing about our position at sea, an interesting lesson about knot’s and...how to pull up and pull down the sails. They all are very huge and they look very, very nice from inside the ship and the from outside.
After some time, the captain was doing a briefing, where he said, that we have crossed line as he expected and we all are very happy about this!
Now we have some free time, I think I use it for sweet afternoon sleep...because everybody from the crew is saying, that for the next few days will not have a lot of possibilities to do it.. :)

The 26 June - an update from the 12 - 4 watch
It's been quite a day today at Christian Radich and we haven´t even finished for for today!
This morning we got our last good nights sleep as we started the real work today, which meant dividing us into three watches. From now on there´s going to be hammocks hanging from the ceiling every hour of the day with grumpy, tired people inside them who have given their best in keeping the amazing ship in action, clean and safe.
We started the day with important themes like safety on board. The experienced crew also took us through a quick history of Christian Radich and explained the whole function of the ship. The trainees went through an evacuation exercise and we got to try on A-class life jackets and survival suits. At 12 o´clock we finally left Turku and millions of waving hands as enthusiastic viewers by the river Aura and on the islands wished us safe winds. Harriet said she felt like a celebrity waving back at them.
After the meal I was to overcome my worst fear: the fear of heights. The trainees got to climb up the rigging one by one and hang on top of the yard waiting for the others to reach it too. I think it must have been one of the most frightening experiences of my life! I kept going on with tears in my eyes and tried to manage my shaking feet. Afterwards I felt proud of what I had achieved and everyone else seemed to have enjoyed the exercise as well :).
I´m now waiting for my 12 to 4 watch to start and listen to the snoring from the hammocks as the trainees prepare themselves for a long night. Excited...

Raceday at the Radich
Race Day - Updates from the 8 - 12
Today is the starting day for the race. Everybody was excited from the early morning, good weather then not too strong winds, good words from the captain which encouraged us to do out best to prepare all of the sails and get ready for the start line.
I was so lucky to have the 8 – 12 watch which allowed me to help with setting the sails – it was more than awesome to be one of the few at the top of the masts and while working to enjoy the other ships which were close to us.
Everyone was getting closer to the start line, we couldn’t be too fast, just not to cross the line before the mid day start, but also we wanted to be very close to the start time even if we had an 20 minute start window – this we managed!
It was much greater than I even expected crossing the start line at 12:02:30 seems more then perfect doesn’t it? The whole crew took part in setting the sails and pulling on the ropes (even the cook) then with the great time, speed and big smiles we could take thousands of pictures of the others who were BEHIND US !
These memories will be in my mind forever - what a spectacular event!
So many huge ships with all sails set – so close to each other, all trying to be the first across the line.
Well, the direction of the wind is not the best for Christian Radich now, but we will do our best to keep the first place. There is a lot to do over the next few days and nights but we have to remember also that the most important thing is the good atmosphere of the event – so keep your fingers crossed for the Christian Radich and her international crew.

Sunday, 26 Juli 4 to 8 Watch - Leaving Turku feeling like a VIP
We left Turku around noon. It was amazing how many people were on the shore waving to us. The sea was full of small boats following us from all around and you could see tall masts of ships across the horizon. Even the president of Finland was there giving her greetings! I have never felt this famous before.
The first lunch onboard was such a thrilling experience: bread, raspberry jam, and Norwegian got cheese…yummy!! The most terrifying moment in my whole life was when we were supposed to climb up the mast. I have never been so afraid of heights before especially when we looked down onto the rolling waves although the support of the other trainees and the crew kept me alive. Climbing back down onto the deck was a lot easier than climbing up, and next time I might climb ‘even’ higher.
I had my first watch at 4pm. My special duty was to look out across the horizon for possible danger objects such as other large boats, buoys and fishing nets. If you spot something you have to ring an old-fashioned bell in order to warn the helmsman at the stern of the ship. We also learned to coil ropes and how to brace the yards (turn them).
We completed a lot of training so that we would be well prepared for the race tomorrow and win again!!

Sunday dinner is just over. We all had one beer, one special Sunday beer, and later on maybe a Sunday cigar for those who want to smoke. Today was a calm day. Last night was when the exiting stuff happened. First at 10 pm the sheet of the topsail broke, which meant it had to come down. In the morning the of going watch discovered a small gap in the mainsail so, that had to come down. And so again after lunch we pulled up the (repaired) mainsail and the topsail. We have lost the gulfstream. The water is now 14.5 degrees celcius.. brrr!! Outside is not to cold, a bit damp, but very nice when the sun comes out. So nice that there was a yoga class going on on the main deck, and even in the rolling seas it was relaxing, or so I heard.. Crew Tecla, between Haliafx and Belfast

After a breakfast brunch we had emergency stations and fire drills and it was funny to see everyone trying to put on the lifejackets.
We left the port with the help of a Finish tug boat named “Fart” to the cheers of the crowd, and along with the rest of the Tall Ships 2009 Baltic Fleet left the fabulous host post of Turku. Sounding a salute to the city we were all nearly deafened by the ship’s horn.
We were then shown around the ship and told about the rules of the ship. In the afternoon we had our first climb up the rigging, which for some was a very emotional experience, but great fun none the less. This was done to the sound of trumpets and the waving of the boats around us – making this an experience you never forget. The watch system also started with a gentle breaking in, including an introduction to the sails and the watches already starting to get competitive – at the time of posting this message we have just 30 minutes before we start our first watch ! Arrived at the Christian Radich in the morning all very nervous. We were shown where we were to sleep in hammocks. This came with a very amusing introduction and demonstration of how to get into a hammock, which was filmed much to consternation of out mentor. We then squeezed our kit into our lockers and then given some free time to wonder round. We walked around the boats which took along time to do since there are so many boats taking part in the event. We came back in time for dinner, which was followed by some get-to-know-each-other games. We then had some free time to explore the nearby pubs. Our mentor enjoying them slightly too much and not coming onboard till the early hours of the morning. Some found the hammocks slightly uncomfortable but others had a good long sleep. After all our efforts last night, in the end, the sail ripped.. on a seam. As it was already getting dark and the wind decreased again, which left us with only rocking waves, we decided to repair the sail in the morning. So this afternoon we hoisted up the mainsail again as the wind picked up and now we are on the move and rocking and rolling again! Not surprising that we lost our first place today, but we still are 2 in class and 3 over all. Slowly everybody is finding their place on board and in the group. Due to the waves we do have some seasick on board, but they are not giving in! We saw some flying fish today and some birds, but other then that, the water is pretty empty. Today's title should be 'sailhandeling!'. Last night the wind picked up, there where a lot of showers around and waves where building up. At the end of the watch we decided to take away the topsails with two watches. Topsails down and the Tecla was still doing an average of 8 knots close hauled. At 10 am I got woken up to help take the big jib down and the small jib up. During the day watch the wind increased a little more and we decided to reef the mainsail. But after we did that, the wind decreased... until it was totally gone and we where rolling all over the place. So we took the reef out and put the big jib up again. During dinner the wind picked up again and after dinner we took the big jib down again and put the small jib up again, put a reef in the main sail and pulled it all back up again! This time the wind stayed!! Downstairs the crew is organizing a sort of song contest/Tecla's got talent. Early Friday morning I flew out from London Heathrow bound for the Finish city of Turku, one of five host ports for this summer’s Tall Ships Race, managed by Sail Training International (www.sailtraininginternational.org).
Upon arrival I join the Norwegian Tall Ship Christian Radich to compete, hopefully winning, the second race leg for this year’s tall ships race. Joining me are over fifty young people from a variety of different countries, all brought together through an international exchange organised by At SeaSail Training.
Over the course of the race, when ever we have signal posts will be published to this blog giving you updates about life aboard Christian Radich and what activities we have been up to ! Today was my birthday. At midnight I came on watch and they had decorated the whole chart/comm room!! They sang for me, but I could only appreciate it after my second cup of coffee. This morning the next watch sang for me and during the day they backed cakes for me. So all together a very nice birthday at sea!! My watch this morning seemed a birthday gift, strong winds, beautiful sail and a speed up to 11 knots, and just a little (read very much) bit wet with rain. Wind changed from direction and then from strength, to almost non existent.. to bad.. But now in the evening we are on the move again. We are still in the gulfstream with saragosa seeds (sorry if I write this wrong) floating all around us. Second day at sea and finally, after 24 hours, the fog lifted. The sailing today has been great, we got a nice speed going on and the sea is still very flat. We lost our first place in our class to the Jolie Brise today and are now second in class and over all. But we are not in Belfast yet! Today we have seen whales, even in the fog we could hear them and then Nele, who was on lookout at the front, saw one very close by. It came up a few times and then disappeared in the fog. During the night watch the lookout reported all sorts of strange things, like monkeys, and even a penguin... so at first I did not believe her, but then I heard it breathing! We are measuring the temperature of the water to see if we have hit the gulfstream yet, so far the temperature has gone up a little, but it is still around 20 degrees celsius (68F). Thick fog, that is what we are in. We had such a nice view of the Capitan Miranda and the Jolie Brise and now they are gone into the fog. Last night was our first night watch. Clare said that as she wrote in her diary about the night watch, she realized how many different things we had talked about, from stars to tamagoshi's and robots, from politics to relationships through the internet and the cyberworld so far away from this boat right now. And so outside it was no problem staying awake, but inside (during the explanation about the navigational area) one of our new crew members had difficulty keeping her eyes open! And we had still another hour to go! The day started with a lot of rain! Fat drops kept coming out of the sky and the wind died out. Then the wind picked up again, died out again and then came the fog... We can hear the Capitan Miranda on the radio, but further more there is no traffic near us. Today was the start of our last race. It does not feel like that, but it is a knowledge in the back of the head of all who have been on the Tecla since the beginning of the race. In the harbor we had to say goodbye to Ashley, after almost 55 days, it is now very strange that she is not here, and that you do not hear her funny phrases everywhere (one of them being: yes yes, I like, I like a lot!). But our new crew is full of energy. Sails go up like nothing and dishes are done without a moody word! At eight we start our real watch schedule, for now everybody is enjoying the sound of our singing ship (as we are already up to 8,5 knots!) and the evening sun, in a nice warm sweater. - Crew Tecla

New crew is on board. We had a nice dinner out side and everybody is finding his or her way around the ship now. the weather is great! Last night the skies seemed to open up and water just kept on pooring out. There was a party on the Pride of Baltimore which got very cosy as we all had to group together underneath the deckcover. There was some nice music and the rain most certainly did not get our spirits down. Tomorrow morning we will be leaving for Halifax at about 08:30 local time. Our board computer crashed and so we will not be able to use our email on board so that means NO updates for the next few days. Today was pricegiving day. It was in a small park some miles away from where the Tecla is docked, so we got a ride on one of the fast boats. We got splashed pretty badly, but it was fun seeing the fleet from the water and to get refreshed as it has become nice and warm here!!
Some of our old crew have left now and some of the new crew is arriving. Tomorrow is the real boarding day, then we are compleet again with 16 trainees!!

Shop till you dropp in Boston
We are in Boston and yesterday was shopping day, today is shopping day and probably tomorrow as well.. Last night it was Crew party in Cheers, a pub owned by the owner of the cafe which appears in Cheers the series.
We had had Pizza for dinner as we are right smack in the middle of an Italian neighbourhood. And we had pizza when we came back from the crew party and we had pizza for breakfast, by now I have had enough pizza!

We zeiln op dit moment het laatste stuk van de race richting St. Petersburg en hebben net een dikke 8 bf gehad geweldig zeilweer trainees en crew helemaal blij. We missen eigenlijk alleen een lekkere verse Zeeuwse bolus want die hebben ze hier niet jammer genoeg.

We finished!! After a long time without wind, the wind finally picked up and the last 13 miles where crossed within 5 hours. This morning when there was no wind, we had a spectacular sighting of whales! All around us there where whales hunting, jumping, coming up with their heads, flapping their tales and most of all just being very big!! The water was almost totally calm, but there where at least 10 whales around us making waves. At one point one came up to the Tecla and was at a distance of maybe 20 meters, it splashed its tale once and went under. It was such an amazing sight!! Really unforgettable! Now we are in Gloucester harbour. It is very beautiful here! Tonight we celebrate being in harbour and tomorrow we go on to Boston! - Crew Tecla

Not finished yet. We hit some light winds and are currently doing 3,5 knots, which is frustrating as we can see land, and almost the point where our finish is, but we are not getting there very fast.. We had a lazy Sunday today. Calm weather and a warm sun for those who wanted to read a book outside or just chatter away. We saw a shark today! And a lot of dolphins. We are in the gulf of Maine and all around us we see yachts who seem to be in a race. It is nice to see so many boats around on a beautiful evening like this, with their colourful foresail's. There is a little fog coming from land, it promises to be another splendid sunset! - Crew Tecla (close to Boston)

We have rounded wp 2 today and are realizing that this race might be coming to an end soon.. On the one hand you hope to be there soon, on the other end, it means no more sailing and saying goodbye to some people who have become dear friends. But lets not think of that yet! Today was cake day! We ate the last bit of the rumcake from Bermuda (thank you chelsea!) and Gijs and Gael made some fresh chocolate and vanilla cake under the instructions of Loes. Besides that we saw some dolphins who did not stay for to long and we are very happy with our new friends the storm Petrel. They are very small seabirds that hang around the boat and dip their feet in water every now and then.. It is not that hot any more, so I don't know why they would do that.. At night (right now..) it is even a bit cold and our thermals have come out of the closet again, I don't mind, during the day it is still very warm in the sun! Crew Tecla

Last night we were preparing for some bad weather, thunderclouds where all around us and we heard from other vessels that they had had a lot of wind. We already had the topsails down and made the deck ready. But no wind came.. we ended up in a calm totally without wind.. strange. So this morning as the breeze picked up again, we set the topsails and low and behold we saw the Urania right next to us. Nele and I did a game of twenty questions during the night, and where I could guess Gaels drumsticks, I could not come up with Frodo from the lord of the Rings. I say I was just very tired and needed coffee! And we both came to the conclusion that we have not had any singing on the aft deck for some time now, maybe tonight is a good night to start again. Smokingggggg!! Last night we set our record of miles per watch! We did 43 miles in the 00 to 04 watch!! Amazing! But everybody in this race seems to be doing very well and going very fast! Just now we tried to set the topsail again after gybing. We knew it would be tough with a lot of wind, so we used jumplines (small ropes around the sail to keep it together when you pull it up and when you pull on the sheet side of the topsail the lines come of and the sail sets itself) but the jumplines came of in a swing with a wave and so we tried to set it without the ropes.. but it was to much, so we took the sail down again. Without topsail we are still very fast and it was a nice exercise! - Crew Tecla

Today we finally caught a fish! Bit we threw it back in the water again. It was a Dolphin fish. And as we are almost in Charleston (;)) and where in the middle of our dinner, we thought it a waste to kill it and not eat it.. It was very big and put up a pretty good fight! Our trainee from Belgium, Gael, hauled her in and with that deserved an applause! During the day the white watch backed an apple pie which was gone within minutes! It said Tecla 1, because that is what we still where today. We keep on meeting wind calms, so we do not know what tomorrow will bring... Crew Tecla

Midsummernight was a succes. We started of with a beautiful sunset at 21:30 BT and after that told our midsummermurder stories. They where creative and fun, and a little scary. There were flying fishes that snatched away cookies that had caused wars, there where love proposals in a dinghy interrupted by a furies person from the Tecla (further names shall not be named, BooBoo) because she needed the dinghy to get to her love and she was assisted by the captain of the MV Butterfly... etc etc! After that we did some broodje aap games and then went to bed. But helaas, not everybody was able to sleep quietly as the mainsail ripped during a period of no wind and crazy waves..
So today was spend repairing the sail and we hope to pull it up later this evening.

We lost our first position to the Pride of Baltimore. It is a very exciting race, with switching places in real positions and on corrected time. So maybe we will be back in the front before long. Today we did a workshop about fire and what procedures to go through at a door and when extinguishing a small fire. Further more we did some games, mastermind was very exciting and after that some sea battles where fought. We saw a coconut drifting today, so the gulf stream can not be far away anymore! - Crew Tecla

Well it is hot again!! We have put up all sorts of wind catchers (thank you for the idea Monique!!!) to get some fresh air in. And as long as this breeze keeps up, we will be doing fine. Last night our jib halliard broke so we had to do without jib for a few hours before it got light and we could bring up a new halliard. This was just as the wind was easing down a little and we thought we had had the worst of the expected strong winds. Today bugs landed on the Tecla, so we know we are getting closer to land. Tonight is midsummersnight! Longest day, shortest night! We are doing a theme night, first midsummersmurder storytelling and after that midsummersgames. It is to hot to sleep anyway!

Its nice out here! It is still warm, but less humid, sleeping is easier for us Europeans now!! The seasick are all better and everybody is getting into the rithme and routine on board. The compass is polished (Jessica and Stefan offered to do so as it looked horrible after the rain of the last few days!), a group of people is doing dishes out on the deck and a group is downstairs doing dishes. The dog has had her first home backed dogbiscuit!

Strong winds prevailed during the night, a lot of showers and shifting winds to go with that. Now the wind is gone again.. we are drifting and rocking as we have done for so many days during the last race. We have just heard the Europa on the VHF saying they have wind, so we are preparing to tack and hoping that the wind will reach us soon as well. We are number one in our class and over all! That was reason for a celebration, so we had banana 'vla' again! But now we are out of vla, so we will have to make banana bread the next time we have to celebrate and get rid of the Banana's.

The start was exciting! We are with so many more ships and we actuallyy had
wind, a lot! Even before we had started we had already changed sails three
times! The waves are uncomfortably short, we have some seasick, but they
take it very well! Some people of the group that brought us to Bermuda are
still on board. As their legs are already shaken in, they are doing very
well. The old crew is being missed, after 29 days you get used to peoples
ways and voices, it is strange to not have them here. But with the new crew
we have new things to talk about, new stories to exchange! New adventures
and places to explore!

Wind has turned against us and increased a little.. Our speed went down and the waves went up! We hope to reach Bermuda somewhere in the night, but are not sure if we are going to enter the harbour in the dark. Today we saw a whale! It was 200 meters away and jumped out of the water twice! This was definitely the best sighting we have had so far. As it came out of the water and landed on the water it made a real big splash and 20 seconds later it jumped again. We also saw two Bermudan Longtail's (birds). Some of the crew felt straight at home at the sight of the bird. They stayed with us for a while, swaying their long tail and gliding through the air like a welcome to Bermuda.

We just hit the 200 miles mark, we are now technically in Bermuda! Or Bermudan waters at least. Spirits are high and we hope to be in Bermuda tomorrow night. Nele our German trainee is getting a lesson in English
(female) literature, she is reading Jane Eyer, and is about to see the movie Emma, after the book emma of Jane Austen. We ate Oma Macaroni, which is a specialty macaroni of my grandmothers and all together we tried to write a Tecla song for the Crew parade about all the different nationalities on board. So today was a very international day. Further more, there is not much news to report. The wind has picked up, but from the wrong direction, so we are sailing almost right into it, but it makes the sun less hot! We saw some birds, some flying fish, a boat and a rain shower past a stern of us. As is daily life on the Tecla.

We came in second.. it must have been very close! Harry came back at 15:15 UTC with the announcement that the results would be a little late. By that time al of us already gathered around the radio, to hear what he had to say, so we where a bit disappointed! Then at 15:45 (or something) he came back with the announcement that the results of the last vessel had just been reported and that the race director would come back to us "shortly"..
Finally at 17:00 UTC the results came back, Jolie Brise one, Tecla two..
arg!!! In the meantime nobody dared to go to the toilet, put on a bathing suit (because we where going to go swimming after the results) or even get a drink, until the results came back! We opened the Lambrousco wine to celebrate and shot the corks as far as we could, just to leave a part of us behind on the spot we had finished (as we had not moved since the finish, due to no wind!). So now the motor is turned on, we just had dinner and tomorrow is another day.. hopefully with some wind so that we don't have to motor all the way to Bermuda!

We are number one again! The rest seems to have no wind, and we at least some..! Today was cleaning day and making up our inventory regarding fresh food and cookies! We cleaned outside and just as we finished spraying the deck we saw some whales/dolphins. We could not really decide on which, it was between a pilot whale and a sort of dolphin, but in the end they both are a sort of large dolphin anyway.. They seemed to have been sunbathing as they lingered at the surface. And we talked to the Bark Europa today! Through the HF we had contact for a while. They where enjoying a steady trade wind and doing a lot of miles per day. They will try and keep in contact with us and race control, but during the coming schedule we could not reach them anymore. It was really cool to all of a sudden hear a Dutch voice and a familiarly name calling us!

Hier gaat het nog steeds geweldig! Met wat lichtere winden zijn de golven ook iets afgenomen, en dat vinden wij helemaal niet erg! Al dat schommelen en zware werk achter het roer is leuk voor een tijdje, maar niet te lang. We hebben nog 550 mijl te gaan naar de finish en gaan ongeveer op ons doel af.
Het weer is mooi, soms wat bewolking maar ook zon, zo'n 18 graden met een koel windje. En wat iedereen nu natuurlijk wil weten is welke positie we hebben in het klassement, nou dat is nog een heel verhaal.. Ze hebben de Kruzenshtern (een heel groot dwarsgetuigd schip met bijna 300 cadetten aan
boord) bij de B klasse in gedaan en nu staat hij eerste in onze klasse en eerste over all.. Wij zijn nu tweede in onze klasse en tweede over all.. Dus eigenlijk zijn we van de B klasse nog eerste! Natuurlijk gaan wij er alles aan doen om onze eerste plaats weer terug te krijgen!!

"we hebben de sokken er goed in" is what we say in dutch, which would translate as "we have got the socks in good".. Or maybe better to say, we are on a roll!! With waves in every direction you look and a wind that has veered from NW to NNE we are currently on a number one position in our class and 2 over all in the race!! Of course it is to early to say anything about the rest of the race, but we did the 'wave' on our aft deck! We altered course this afternoon and are on a postside tack, which seems to agree better with the crew. We have some sick on board, but after a day they are getting better and better. Will let you know more when there is news to tell!

YESYESYES we gaan varen over de woelige golven.
Maar haast onverwachts werden wij door “zeeziekte” bedolven.
Wij begonnen de reis met een hoop lachende gezichten en dat deed mij vreugd.
Want er is niks mooiers dan een lachende jeugd.
Klimmen en klauteren in de masten vond men mooi.
Iedereen deed zijn ding zonder geklooi.
Lekker in het dagverblijf spelletjes spelen in onze vrije tijd.
Ik weet zeker dat niemand denkt:” goh wat heb ik toch een spijt”.
Want er is niks mooiers dan zeilen!
Toch moet er ook gewerkt worden want we moeten elke dag dweilen.
Maar dat doen wij veel plezier en zingen in koor:
“ Zet eens wat vette hardcore op want dit softe gedoe is geen gehoor”.
Lekker schrobben van ’t kontje tot de boegspriet.
Ja ik weet het echt zeker, niemand gaat naar huis met een gevoel van verdriet.
Want stiekem houden wij allen van varen over de woelige golven.
En uiteindelijk hebben wij de “zeeziekte” bedolven.
Met een hoop lol en kameraadschap kom je het verst.
Jongens jongens wat zal ik hier nog altijd leuk op terug kijken zoals wij allen de morgenster door de golven heen hebben geperst.
Naar Engeland en weer terug met tassen vol cadeautjes en mooie verhalen.
Zullen wij het land omarmen en stiekem toch een beetje balen want het was een super mooie trip.
Nu we jullie verlaten zijn we toch een beetje sip.
