Culture Regatta 2011 - Jacob Meindert

In 2011 the Tall Ships will not only be racing in the Tall Ship Races 2011, but there is also a small Baltic regatta – The Culture 2011 Tall Ships Regatta! For this regatta there is no age restriction.

After the big succes of the Tall Ships Races 2009, the Tall Ships are invited back to race between Klaipeda, Turku en Gdynia. The races will start in the middle of August until the start of September and they will visit the European city of Culture 2011, Turku.

Legs:
Klaipeda* (Lithuania) – Turku (Finland)
Race1 : 20 - 27 August 2011
Turku (Finland) – Gdynia** (Poland)
Race2 : 27 August 4 September 2011

*Possible to get on board in Rostock and sail to Klaipeda

**After Gdynia you can also sail on to Kiel

Klaipeda (Lithuania) 18 -21 August
Klaipeda has fallen in love with the Tall Ships Races. In 2009 it was the last port of the Race, this year, they start there. The Tall Ships will be docked in the middle of the city. And as this is not the first time Klaipeda will be a host port, it will surely be one big festival!

Turku (Finland) 26 – 28 August
Turku (together with Tallinn) is the Capital of Culture of 2011. Turku also was one of the host ports in 2009, but also in many years before that. With that experience they will make a beautiful combination between culture and sailing. Before getting into the harbor the vessels will have to sail past hundreds of small islands, a beautiful sail in with a lot of navigating.

Gdynia (Poland) 2 – 5 September

Gdynia is knows as Poland’s capital of sailing. The city and surrounding areas give a real feel of water and water activities. The Tall Ships will be welcomed into the city with the red carped rolled out. There are things to see and places to go for everybody

All the crew reacts promptly and even de masts bend over to starboard to see what’s going on. The goodbye-to-Antarctica sadness prompts everybody to feast their eyes on this last antarctic treat.

Somebody somewhere must have thrown a small fortune in the whale-machine. We get to see four whales playing together in a quarter of a mile circle around Europa. Every lack of a diving whale tail in any camera is made good.

The four are toying with us: disappearing and surface right next to our ship, swim under the ship from port to starboard, wave a white fin at us, demonstrate skills in backstroke… Antarctica does not let us go yet.

A ship full of people applauds the whale-show and is two bits less sad for the moment.
