International Exchanges

INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGES

Youngsters - between the age of 15 and 25 - from all over the world, together onboard one ship, sail training at sea, connecting with other cultures, lots of fun and having the experience of a lifetime! That’s an International Exchange!

At Sea Sail Training organises International Exchange Programs on a variety of Sail Training Ships during events like the Tall Ships Races. All Exchange Programs have the same offset, but the experience and interpretation of the programs differ for each and every trip depending on the voyage, the ship, the cultures and the wind!

INTERNATIONAL CREW
On an International Exchange you will sail a ship together with trainees from several different nationalities. This will broaden your horizon and feed understanding and tolerance for different cultures. English is the official language onboard and for your own safety a working knowledge of this language is necessary.

Next to participation in all aspects of Sail Training (pdf), like manoeuvring, navigating, climbing the rigs, cooking and cleaning, you will do activities that enhance cultural exchange, some ashore with local communities and some onboard with the crew.

All activities like debates, national dinners, games, and discussions are considering cultural differences and/or are related to a certain theme: ‘Seafarers Then & Now’ for example, will introduce you to the maritime history and cultures at sea. You will become aware of the innovation of ships, harbours and maritime subjects and will investigate the discussion about new sustainable and environmentally friendly innovations within the maritime sector.

SPONSORING
All International Exchanges are sponsored trips. The financial support of the sponsorship and/or funding differs per exchange. Please check out the specific exchange information per ship and find out how much your financial benefit will be! It is also possible to find an individual sponsorship or fund for the support of your voyage fee.

MENTORS
Mentors accompany the exchange programs onboard for the necessary support of trainees and are responsible for the program schedule. If you are a mentor yourself (at youth organizations, .. etc.) and would like to join and organize an International Exchange Program onboard with a group of youngsters in cooperation with At Sea Sail Training? Please contact us!

The gloomy mood of our first mile on the way to `The Battle of DrakeŽ is suddenly interrupted when Klaas yells out `Whale off the starboard bow!”

All the crew reacts promptly and even de masts bend over to starboard to see what’s going on. The goodbye-to-Antarctica sadness prompts everybody to feast their eyes on this last antarctic treat.

Somebody somewhere must have thrown a small fortune in the whale-machine. We get to see four whales playing together in a quarter of a mile circle around Europa. Every lack of a diving whale tail in any camera is made good.

The four are toying with us: disappearing and surface right next to our ship, swim under the ship from port to starboard, wave a white fin at us, demonstrate skills in backstroke… Antarctica does not let us go yet.

A ship full of people applauds the whale-show and is two bits less sad for the moment.
