Wylde Swan

Go to bookings and prices Wylde Swan is the world largest topsail schooner, rebuilt in 2010. She will be a potential winner of Tall Ships Races, fitted out as a sail training vessel and crewed by sailors who have been professionally prepared to act as sailing tutors. She is bought, rebuilt and managed by the same team as the Swan fan Makkum. There are also little sloops on deck to sail when it is possible when she is in the harbour or anchoring close to a beach or nice isle.

A trainees insight
“It was great to learn sailing, to see how I can contribute to a good atmosphere and to people. I enjoyed almost every minute of the trip and learned a lot about me and got to know a lot of other people and their way/ mentality. The crew is great and caring, the captain nice and skilled guy and a captain! I just enjoyed it a lot, challenged myself and can’t wait till the next time to be on board this ship, with this crew!"

History

Wylde Swan was called 'Jeno' at the moment, she had hit the water in 1920 as the steam trawler, built for the German Wilhelmshavener Hochseefischerei AG of stringen. She got names as Ursula, Hariet, Are and the last name was Jemo, almost the same as the first time. The hull is of an old 'market chaser'. Such fast vessels bought herring catches from drifters, to bring them to market before the competition. In 2001 Sligting bought the ship. The Wylde Swan is built according to the plans of Willem Sligting and Hinke de Vries, an experienced couple in building ships like the fast B-class Jacob Meindert and the Swan fan Makkum. The latter was a real race-ship and is now sold to the Italian Marine. The Wylde Swan is built to be the biggest (and hopefully the fastest) topsail schooner!

The gloomy mood of our first mile on the way to `The Battle of DrakeŽ is suddenly interrupted when Klaas yells out `Whale off the starboard bow!”

All the crew reacts promptly and even de masts bend over to starboard to see what’s going on. The goodbye-to-Antarctica sadness prompts everybody to feast their eyes on this last antarctic treat.

Somebody somewhere must have thrown a small fortune in the whale-machine. We get to see four whales playing together in a quarter of a mile circle around Europa. Every lack of a diving whale tail in any camera is made good.

The four are toying with us: disappearing and surface right next to our ship, swim under the ship from port to starboard, wave a white fin at us, demonstrate skills in backstroke… Antarctica does not let us go yet.

A ship full of people applauds the whale-show and is two bits less sad for the moment.
